I'm about to move and I have to decide if I should keep my little Mercury. If I take it, it'll be expensive and I really won't have room for it. If I leave it, well, I don't want it to be a parts car. Silly, huh? So, I guess I want to ask what y'all think would be a reasonable price to ask for it (hey--I read the rules on the classifieds! I need a price!). I'm willing to part with it very cheap if I was convinced it was going to be driven and not parted out. I apologize if this is inappropriate. I'm just clueless. Pricecheck! 1974 4 door Comet, 120,000 miles, 302 auto, AC, original paint, 13ish year old vinyl top, very good condition, garaged most of its life, 2nd owner, not running (but probably easy to get going since it didn't break; I just stopped driving it about 10 years ago). Rust free--originally CA car, 6 year stint in Texas, garaged but never driven in MI. All service records since ~ 36,600 miles including gas usage. O yeah...fuel gage didn't work really well. Guess I'd include my almost complete set of Ford dealer shop manuals. Nice gold color with pinstripes and matching wheel covers. So...whatchall think? Should I try for more than free to good home? I do want to keep it, but it's pretty irrational--it's gonna cost me $2000 to move it (according to my relo company which I think is a bit high but it's not gonna be cheap) and I'm tired of keeping my truck in the driveway...advise me please! Thanks!
depends on rot, if the quarters, cowl, floor , torque boxs, etc look good then you might be able to get something out of it, but honesty 4 doors arnt bringing the money well actully no maverick/comet is , but IMO 2 drs are worth more even though latly ive seen some sweet 4 doors worst 250 no rot 1000 MAYBE just my 2 shinny pennies
Thanks guys. I do know it's pretty much worthless. That makes it really hard to tell the difference between someone who wants to fix it up and someone who wants to take it apart. Now, if only I could find someone (with a trailer) who actually wanted a 4-door project car...
You guys don't really want to drive a sedan do you? I'm going to have to talk with my mover and see just exactly what I can do with it. Maybe if I get it running or register it or something. Sure, I don't have any place for it at my new house, but it's not like I have a place for it here either and I somehow get by. This website is awful. How can I get rid of my Comet when I come here and get pulled into the member pictures...oooooh Comets! I get myself all mentally prepared to lose the little mercury and then here I am again, thinking "well, what if?...". I mean, it's nice that there are people who respect these cars and all, but I should get rid of it now, not be looking into how to register it in a new state. Ack!! (yay...old enough to skip the smog test. I should not need to know that!)
Where are you moving to? You may be able to use an auto transportation company. Which is probably what the relo company is doing and marking up the cost. I have gotten quotes to move a car from LA to St. Louis for $700 and that was for a non operational car.
Thanks for the tip--we're going to CA. The relo agent said that the thing would actually go into the moving van for that price, and that does sort of explain the expense. The actual moving co. rep will be by soon to assess our junk and I'll see if I can get a better deal by getting it running, registered, and insured. (The bonus of having a car in the moving van is that, in my experience, you can usually put stuff in the car that isn't allowed in the van.)
I'm going to the bay area and intend to do as little as possible when I get there. Maybe I'll work on my Comet! Darn inspirational web site!
lots of members in california. i was just thinking of a 4dr project today. i remember seeing the 4dr car on here with the chopped top. i thought thsat looked sweet. would be a cool race car. tube frame, big engine, get in through any door. 4dr cars are looking better and better as people start to do things with them. i'd check into a car hauler and compare prices.good luck.
look in this forum for a post titled" a few pics of my 71 maverick." i have posted some pics of my 4 DOOR that i think almost anyone would be proud to drive. with the right touches these cars can go from basic to holy cow. you already have the right basis for the project you just need the motivation and inspiration. the stripes on my car have been added. b.t.w. so yes you can stripe them and have it look right. that shipping quote is very high. i shipped a car from texas to florida for $600 and a car from terra haute indiana to florida for $500. call around there are alot better deals out there. a few people on here feel a four door is worthless except for parts but to others the true value in anything is in the joy it brings you, not the monitary value. yes, 4 doors sell for less than 2 doors except when they are done up right and the right buyer comes around. if you love the car it's value just went up. good luck with the move. keep us posted.
That is a very inspiring car. I should not have looked. I do need to grow up and lose my comet, so I guess I'll try to get together some info to advertise . But if I can't sell it in a week or two, I wasn't meant to lose it and I'll be forced to take it with me. Thanks all for the advice!
