Hello everyone, iv been a member for awhile, but this is my first post. My son and I have a 72 comet GT that we have down to the shell for body work. I also have a 1970 Maverick. I bought another 70 Maverick parts car with no title for parts we needed for both cars. The parts car body is in way better condition than the GT body. Does anyone know what is involved in switching vin/ body panels to make it legal. Any advice or insight would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. Old Griz.
So in theory it would be ok to replace like 90% of the 72 gt body work on the original ,but not switch the vin numbers and then destroy the original 72 gt making the 70 the 72 gt?
There are some differences between a 70, and a 72, just depending on what you are planning to swap. Vin swapping is against the law everywhere.
It is against the law, but the only place the vin # is stamped on the body is along the top front fender aprons. If you cut those two sections out, and then weld in a new body, who's to say and who's to know. But as Dave said, there are differences between the 70 and all other years.
Thanks for the replys. I looked into getting a new title for the donor car, in new mexico it is a long drawn out process and expensive. haven't ruled out going that way, just researching all the options. also I would like to keep the body as true to original as possible. I know the front sheet metal is different, but what are the differences in the main body?
The 70 has a narrower trans tunnel and the 70's trunk pan has a huge square hole cut for the drop-in, bolt-in tank. The 72 will have a strapped-on tank and a continuous floor pan. Not to mention, the tail light panels are obviously not the same... (Maverick/Comet)
