Great. Seven MORE years of bad luck! Okay, so the glue holding my interior review mirror decided to disintegrate. The mirror falls to the floor. Somehow (don't ask), the mirror-to-extension ball-and-socket disassembled itself. Realizing this was a job for someone who knew what they were doing, I took on the job instead. Low and goshdarn-heck behold, I managed to break the glass when urging the ball back into the socket . . . using the carrier rack on my 4-wheeler and a 2X4 as a leverage. Go finger. At first, I tried using a vice (with padding twixed the jaws and a 1X4 on the outter frame of the mirror) but it wouldn't open up wide enough. The mirror is trash now, but I thought I'd confess my stupidity I mean experience. As "misery loves company", anybody else as smart as I am and have done the same thing? C'mon. I know you're out there (aren't you?).
Nope not here! But I did break a whole case of mirrors for the back of doors (the long skinny ones) while unloading freight. I guess I'm still paying for that one! That's why I always end with Good Luck!
Anyone on here actually know the correct way to reinstall the ball-and-socket assembly on these mirrors? Just curious (going to place want ad for replacement mirror now. )
Not a mirror but I once did something stupid. I was given a rear qtr glass for my Corolla, brand new in the box. I opened it and looked at it. Why I HAD to look at it I don't know, just had to. I set it in the back seat for later. I go about my day and forget about it. Later when at home I see the qtr glass that is broken in the door and remember I have the replacement. So I go to get it out of the car and begin carying it to the garage to get it out of the way and what do you know... it slips out the end I opened and I end up having to buy one anyway.
put the ball in the freezer for an hour or so and warm up the socket and it will probably go in. (since it's you asking, I won't say put the socket in the oven. )
I think I'll probably go to Vato Zone and get a replacement mirror. I don't really like the looks of the Wink mirror. I'm sure they're much better than the original tho. "No Comment", Grabber5.0!
Ditto what grabber 5.0 said Rick.Put some lube on the ball before you re-install it to the mirror housing.Of course this is all for future reference since your going to get a new one.
Dont feel bad, check out my tale of woe: I had a brand new windshield installed in my car. Guy comes and installs it in my driveway for around 250. reinstalls the crappy mirror. mirror was shot (delaminated from glass due to someone using the wrong glue to install a new glass in the housing) So I get a nice one from EBAY. I remove the set screw but cant budge it off the button. I realize it is glued to the button with that crazy adhesive. Now it is really pissing me off cause it aint even centered. Its off by about 2 inches, So now I am cursing the glazier. I grab the mirror and twist and pull until the button pops off the windshield. I was glad it popped out until i realized some glass ripped out along with the button. So I seperate the button from the old mirror to use it with the new mirror.(some glass still attached) Add then glue and reluctantly push it back it the same off-center spot, pushing and gluing the glass back in the hole it came out of. as I apply pressure and hold waiting for the glue to dry, the winshield CRACKS. Did I mention how nice this windshield was? I have never even run the wipers on it! Anyway I put the new mirror on and it lasted about a week, then fell off. I hope that makes you feel better about your troubles. ~Brian
Thanks. I feel MUCH better! Got a $13.87 mirror at local parts store. It shakes like a $13.87 mirror purchased from a local parts store.
Rick; I have had one of those cheap mirrors on my car for about 9yrs. You are right, shakes like crazy. I can hardly see out the back. One of these days I'll get a good one!
I have lots of original factory rear view mirrors for sale. Email me directly (see below) if I can help anybody.
Rick, I love you man, I don't know if you trying or not but you are bringing happiness to my life with your contributions. And believe me when I say "I'm not laughing at you, but the way you are saying it".
Ha! Glad you enjoy the random ramblings, Ward. Even if only for a brief period, this is a great place to cleanse one's self of stupidity - each and every time I do something stupid. Sort of like, "Forgive me my fellow MMB members, for I have failed." Ray, don't you have a Shelby hood to install? Hmmmm? Hmmm?
