    Hi guys

i have been a fan of the mercury comet and the ford maverick since i saw a comet back a few years ago, it was an ugly green looking car that at first look i thought was a mustang from the back end of it, well it has set and a gun shop for a few years now and at one time it had a for sale sign in the window but now no longer does, so i stoped in at the gun shop and talked to the owner about it, he said that he would sale it for 2000, here is the condition of the car
    it is a 1973 comet
it has the v6 in it and is auto
it has a hole in the plastic grill not really bad
the back bumer would need to be replaced or bent back out
has a few dings in the pass. door, looks like they could be fixed no problem, it has very minor rust, looks only to be at the surface, nice clean motor it fired up after a few cranks, it was about 40 degress out side, sounded real good from what i could tell, the paint job is nice, the inside is perfect but an ugly green color, the dash has faded some but not real bad no cracks and it has an aftermarket tape deck, has real good tires on it but it has ugly hubcaps, there is a small dent in the hood, but he has a hood scoup(sp?) that he isnt put on and it would go where the ding is so that isnt a big deal if i put the scoup on.
that about sums up the car, my question is do you all feel it is worth 2000 for, im 18 and i dont have much money so i dont want to waste what i do have, any feedback would be very helpful. thank you, also i live in kentucky.

    thanks guys

First, you need to check the frame from front to back and floorboards, especially as it has been sitting. Check the trunk floor very well also. You didn't mention anything about the transmission. Run it a while and make sure it is solid, doesn't leak, and shifts ok. I realize test driving it may be a problem with it being off the road as long as it has been. The price seems a bit high to me for a Comet that has been sitting and is not clean. If the rear quarters need replaced, you're looking at several hundred $$ for the panels alone. If the fronts need replaced, it may be a more expensive proposition as nobody makes aftermarket replacements for the front and you'd need to find used or fiberglass. If the floorboards are rough, that can be rectified as long as they aren't real bad. If the frame is rough, that is another animal. Also, look at along the shock towers under the hood for rust. Best thing is to take someone with you that really knows bodies and cars and can advise you. Even if you have to pay someone professional a few bucks to look at it for you, it may be money well spent. Try to get the price down.

Sounds a little expensive. By the way it is a straight 6 not a V6 unless someone switched engines (which is unlikely). My friend bought a 73 Mav with A/T a 250 6cyl and only 85,000mi for $800. If it has the 250 I wouldn't go over $1200.00, If it has the 200 I wouldn't bother.

Hey now, theres nothing wrong with a 200 :p if it is a 200 i'd only go as high as $700 though, ask him to open the hood for ya and look at the engine sticker on the left side of the valve cover providing the sticker it still readable it should tell you the engine size at the very top. I really don't think you should pay more then $900 to be honest it sounds like you will easily put that much into the car once you have it so you don't want your initial investment to be high.
