I replaced my plugs about 4,000 miles ago when I did my Duraspark II swap. The old plugs that were ran with the points were orangeish purple color. I put new ones in for the heck of it and today I decided to pull a couple out to see how everything looks. The plugs still look NEW!? They are perfect white just like the day I put them in, they have over 4,000 miles on them! How can this be? Is it ok? They could pass for brand new plugs! Dosen't seem right or normal to me...
Well thats what made me wonder. I think I'm going to richen it up a little bit and check them again in a month or so.
Running a little lean. Is your engine running cool? myself and stmanser are running hot because of the lean mixture.
My engine very rarely gets above 190. It stays between 170-185 running around town. I was told it "smelled" like it was running rich so I leaned it out a little. It's a 250 six.
Jamie If The Plugs Look Good And The Engine Is Running Good Then Why Would You Want To Mess With It? Just Because They Are White And Clean Doesn't Mean There Is Something Wrong, unless You Have A Dead Cylinder Or More Then I Would Just Run It Untill It Gives Problems.
I don't know, I was just kind of dumbfounded when I pulled those plugs and they looked like new. No other car I have ever worked on still had plugs look like new after 4,000+ miles. This engine is 31 years old and has amost 100,000 miles on it, last thing I was expecting to see was plugs that still look new. Just seemed strange to me, wanted to make sure it didn't mean anything... I guess I'll just leave it alone and see what they look like after it turns 100,000 (3,000 miles to go)
I'd leave them alone as mentioned. Running lean isn't always bad. As long as it doesnt ping or run hot I'd leave it, better fuel mileage that way also
If it pinged, I wouldn't know it it's so loud. My exaust manifold has seen better days and is going downhill quick. I would love to get a header when I get the money for one...
Jamie, after I did the Duraspark conversion mine looked new also, it's just that the Duraspark is Mo' Betta than points.
