After much pain and labor, the 351W came to life today!!! The 351W has the following: - Approx 8.5:1 compression - D00E casting cylinder heads - Crane powermax cam 204/216@.050 .456/.484 lift 112 Lsa - Edelbrock Performer intake - Holley4160 600cfm vacuum secondary carb. - Stock exhaust manifolds (we gave up on trying to make Hooker 6901 headers fit) Oil pressure was an excellent 50psi cold and about 28psi when hot at idle. Water temp never exceeded 190* The Crane cam has a fairly smooth idle and great throttle response. Still have to fine tune the timing and idle mixture but, it's in the ball park now. Now for the bad news...the rebuilt C4 trans. that went in with the 351W isn't working. We put about 8 quarts of tranny fluid in plus 1.5 quarts in the torque converter. The tranny won't shift into any gear. It's like it's dead. Any ideas? thanks, Mark
MP, Congrat on getting it going. Your engine combo is very close to mine, except I have the .478/.492 Ford Motorsports cam. You will like how it drives ... lots of gas pedal under your foot from any speed on the road. I am amazed that you got manifolds to fit ... are those the 302s originals? ... or some other Ford manifolds. I ended up having some 302 headers heavily modded because nothing else was working here. Can't help you on the tranny. Being that it was recently rebuilt, I wonder if fluid isn't getting everywhere that it needs to go ... like it may have air trapped, but that is a total guess, though. I am sure someone here can give you a better answer. Auto trannies are still voodoo to me after all these years.
Congrats on the Motor Alot of people say to fill the tranny up let your car idle for about 30 min to work all the tranny fluid through the transmission, check your levels and then you can start working from there.....Check your linkage and make sure it is adjusted correctly...(I know stupid things that you have already checked and done but I was up late arguing with my mother in law on why the stupid camera on her puter would not work her saying when I updated it and anti-virused her system I killed it. I argued it was something she did...turns out it wasn't plugged in).....After that your best bet is to get ahold of PaulS or some of the other guys on the C4...they could probably diagnose it in their sleep
Are you certain the the torque converter went all the way in to the pump. I have seen a lot of people slide it on the input shaft and maybe turn it till it slides into to the 1st notch and think they got it. Well, it has be be turned untill it slides in to two notches. I've sold a couple of used c4's before and both times the buyer screwed them up not knowing this. Just a thought that pops into my mind but hopefully that isn't the problem.
Thanks guys, As Rayzorsharp said, I suspect that the torque converter input shaft isn't engaged fully. We will start with the basics and go from there...IF the torque converter isn't seated right, can this be corrected with the trans. in the car? Captaincomet, we had to re-use the stock 302 exhaust manifolds. Even then we had to grind on them to make 'em fit. How are engines expected to exhale with those pathetic logs?
If that is the case, the pump may be damaged. Not a big deal but the tranny would have to come back out to fix. PaulS would be a good one to ask about this. You can contact him here if you want. He probably knows as much or more than anyone on here about these trannies. He will be very helpful.
I got the PM and have provided things that can be checked - we kind of by-passed the posts here... sorry.
