Hello guys, just picked up a 1975 Comet 2 door 3 spd, 66,000 original miles. The VIN is 5K31L546547 .. it appears to have the GT hood scoop and Magnum 500 rims. I am wondering if the car is a GT model? I thought because the L in the VIN means it came with originally a 6 cylinder that it must not be a GT model, but then I was on ebay and found a 74 GT with an L in the engine code for the VIN (check it out here: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1855943632) Here are some pics of my car for now: So what can you tell me about it??
Yes it is looking more and more like a GT. I opened the doors and inspected the jams and see some remains of the factory black pinstipe, it looks exactly like this one:
I want to repaint the car, would it be worth more to sell in the original color (yellow) or can I go with something different?
As much as i would like them to be, Mavericks and comets are not exactly collector's cars. What i mean is, you're not going to find anyone to buy it who cares whether the numbers match or the paint is the same or if it has been modified. In my opinion, that's a good thing! Change what you don't like!
but...on the other hand, there are still a lot of people, especially like the ones on this board who can appreciate an unmolested orginal. Either way, you likely won't get more than a few thousand for it mint.
Re: GT You seem to have the blacked out grill and headlight rings, all on the GT package as well. I have a '74 Comet GT, I changed mine to '73 bumpers, though. That is about the only visual change I plan to make. I had a friend in high school, I have owned mine for 18 yrs., who had a yellow one, it was not bad looking. There was a lime green (grabber green?) '71 that just bid to $5,000 on e-bay. It had some funky looking wheels and a vinyl top, but appeared to be mint other than that. In my opinion, driveability modifications along with original appearance will outwell radical paint jobs, ie-purple/green/gold chameleon and pearl colors all day long. Keep it at least an original available color. Mine is 'bright red', ford code 2B. It has a hint of orange in certain light. I have seen: White with black or orange stripes. Black with white or silver or white stripes. Friend had one with silver stripes('72), with black taillight panel. I have seen pics of argent(silver) t/l panel. Orange with white or black stripes. Yellow with black stripes. Medium lime metallic (another friend had one of these, he called it the 'Vomit Comet') with black stripes. Gold/Bronze with black stripes. Grabber blue with black stripes. Beige with black stripes. Some kind of caramel color with white stripes. Dark metallic blue with gold stripes (74-75). Dark metallic green with black stripes(71) That's about all I remember seeing, I am sure there may be more. Seth seth@realtor.com
Re: GT verification Look under the door(facing the ground on the passenger side in the middle of the car. There is 'supposedly' a unique stamp code there that signifes GT's and Grabbers. I have heard this,, but do not know if it is true. Someone else here may know if it is true and what it should read. Seth seth@realtor.com
You got a nice looking that seems to be in good shape, but unfortunatly you won't be making a big profit on it when you sell it. I personally would paint it any color you like and drive it with pride. Tony
I'm not going to be keeping the car, I picked it up just for fixing up a bit and selling it. I will probably be putting the car on eBay within the next few weeks. I decided to go with the factory yellow and black color scheme. I will be leaving the bumpers even though they are bigger - Thanks guys!
