Well, I just kind of worked myself into a corner. I was checking on the possibility of getting an old Ford PU for parts and next thing I know, it's mine. I need the winshield and a host of other parts on it.

It has a 302 in an unknown condition along with a c4 transmission. I am thinking the engine will be in our maverick some day, if it's rebuildable (I bought it fourth hand from a guy who has no knowledge of it's history).

One of the things I've learned hanging around here is that not all c4 transmissions are the same.

So, what is the difference between the c4 in that truck and the c4 behind the I6 250 in the maverick? Do I need to switch trannies with the engine swap, or will the car c4 do ok with the 302?

use the tranny behind the 302...it was built to handle a 302...the tranny behind the 250 was built to handle the 250...302 is stronger, i'm almost positive

the difference probably is that the truck tranny is usually a pan fill, whereas the car is a case fill. so the dipstick in the truck, i believe, goes into the pan. the problem here is that this sometimes interferes with certain headers. not sure on the hookers. :)

So, is there a difference internally, as in is one "stronger" than the other?

I had a c4 on my '76 F100 (also has a 302 -now q 306), but it did not hold up to ranch work and I ultimately replaced it with a c6.

I just looked in the transmission section (didn't realize it was there) and have come to the conclusion that you can take what I know about how an automatic transmission works and stick it in your eye and it won't hurt.:hmmm:

Don't go stickin' things in your eye!
The transmission that is bolted (or was) to the 302 has more clutches in each of the two packs. That makes it hold more torque than the one that is behind the six. The case may or may not be the large bell housing case. (both the large and small bell housings are made to fit the 302) If it has the bell housing that bolts to the front of the transmission (and not the pump) the case IS stronger. It is capable of modifications that will hold up to 1000 hp. The small case is limited to about 800 hp with the same mods.
Neither of these transmissions will hold more than about 350 hp as they sit and the one behind the six will only hold about 200hp as it is.
What all this boils down to is that you should use the tranny that came with the V8 behind the V8. If you are going to build the 302 for more hp you should also build the C4 to match.
