Well I go to get the Comet on Friday. But we have a problem. The Ignition keys are gone. The owner doesn't know where they are. Is there an easy way to remove the old lock cylinder without wrecking the column? Or should I just break downa and call a lock smith? Jeff
I would call a call a lock smith, May cost a little but you will have a key and save some time and work. Good luck Jim
This has been discussed before, take a look at this thread: http://www.maverick.to/mmb/showthread.php?t=7661
If you have some old ford keys laying around take them with you my dad lost the key to the 70 mave he gave me and i got a key from the old 75 f250 truck we had to work i had to jingle it but it worked. Jim
Yep, that sometimes will work if you have a large collection of keys. My grandpa has kept a key from basically every car he has owned (over 50 fords probably), and has all of them on one gigantic key chain. I found 3 keys that fit my F250, and 2 keys that fit our '74 Grabber on his ring. Sometimes you gotta jiggle it a little to get a diffrent key to work. The key from my Grandma's '88 Mercury Grand Marquis actually fits our '74 almost perfectly.
I didn't read the link, so this may be a repeat. Someone in the past suggested removing the door lock, assuming the door is not locked. Take that to a locksmith and have him make a key to fit it. It will be the same as your column switch. Seth
Thanks guys! I'll probably do the locksmith thing. Aren't the trunk keys basicly the ignition keys with a reverse key way?
I dunno about column locks, but on our old dash mounted locks on other vehicles, a 3/4 drill bit comes in handy. Of course I do believe the entire assembly is much cheaper too in the dash in case of a screw up.
Put the car on the trailer and take it to a locksmith. He can do both. Or if you need a trunk lock with key, I have plenty. Email me at Mavaholic@aol.com
Locks The plan is to get a two wheel tow dolly, my set of 15 inch magnums bolt those onto the back of the car (rear tires are dry rotted and I'm not keen on blowing a tire on the car) pop the tranny in neutral and go to the lock smith right after we leave the dueds place in Columbia. I'll e-mail ya on the trunk lock. Once again, thanks so much for the help folks. This is super forum! Jeff
No need to take the whole car down there. Just pop out the driver's door lock (15 minute job or less) and take that to the locksmith.
