A follow up on the fellow Mav driver who was seriously injured in a motorcycle accident. He is doing better but has lost a finger and plates in his broken arm. Many cuts and contusions along with a head injury(was wearing a helmet, but when you are hit by a F350 4wheel drive, it got ripped off his head). Our track has two team races each year, and this week, Mavman and myself, joined three other racers, to try and win the event and donate the winnings to our comrade in pain. Had a Ford Falcon, 68 and 86 Mustang, and a Jr. dragster, to round out the team. We were all pumped to win rounds to gain one point each, and to battle with the other teams for the win. Falcon driver had some bad luck on the draw and lost first two rounds, the 68 Mustang broke a u-joint (Tremic four speed that launches extremely hard with the 408ci) The rest of us, including the Jr. dragster were having good luck and running almost dead on dials and very good rt's. Ended up with Mavman in his yellow 414ci Maverick, myself in the trusty 331 Fairmont, going to the semi-finals against a 68 Torino and a 68 Charger (both former track champs). I had a starter problem in the staging area and after a lot of help got her fired and in the haste to get on the pad, forgot to buckle up, hard to do with the helmet and stuff on. Got it done up but the frustration and pressure of wanting the win, busted a red light against the Torino, and was out. Mavman ran the Charger and lost by .001 at the finish line. The Torino ended up winning the Pro class, now there was a tie between us and another team of racers, so we had a runnoff to decide the winner. I was on the bubble to race a street class winner, but with starter prob's, Mavman was the next in line to run for the win. The Mav had run the 1000 ft track, at 8.03 or 4 all day, the street Camaro was running 11.40's. Makes for a long wait on the tree but the Mav came through and caught the man and took the win for our friend. 200.00 purse, went into the collection that had been taken up, and a whooping 1400 dollars was going to our injured fellow racer. Just shows how much of a family atmosphere comes out of racing together at our track, as is the case most everywhere. Only regret I have, is that I red lighted out and missed a chance that I have wanted for many years now, to go to the finals against my son in the Maverick. Have raced him in some elimination rounds but never got to the big one, YET. Thanks all for your replies and prayers for our friend, he will pull through and be back in his Maverick, kicking butt again next year.
congratulations. that's a great thing to do. one of the things i decided to do this year was to keep 10% of my winnings and donate them to a charity. out of 6 races at tucson i went to 3 semi's and 2 finals. 10% of this was donated to the red cross for katrina victims. i plan to continue this from now on.
I like 'feel good' stories. That was certainly one, OldGuy. I wish your buddy a speedy recovery. 'Good to hear your plan too, Don. Both are Good Folk.
Rick you just echoed my feelings to a Tee. Too many times do we hear nothing but tragedy and hurt(since the media shoves it down our throats) I love hearing the feel good stories myslef. Way to go guys
Glad to hear you raised some money for him. I know he needs it. I'd love to be able to race any of you guys out there... be in Junior, Dave or Todd. But the most important thing is that you helped out a friend in need.
