Okay, so I've backed myself into a rut and I was hoping someone had some insight. I have a '85 302 in my Mav, but I put a '77 302 timing chain cover on it. It now has the correct '85 harmonic balancer, but now there doesn't seem to be enough clearance to put the '77 302 timing index thingy.

So...will an '85 timing index thingy fit on the '77 timing chain cover, or do I need to put the '77 one on and figure out how to make it work. If it's the latter, then how should I go about making sure everything's lined up correctly?

Please bear in mind that I've never done timing in my life...

    Thanks!
    Atzy.

If I remember correctly, the '85 timing covers have a window built into them that acts as the timing pointer, meaning that the '77 timing pointer will not work unless modified. Also, if memory still serves me correctly, the timing marks on the '85 damper are in a different place than on the '77, due to the difference in location for the pointer. If it was me, I'd just get a timing tape and mark it yourself.
