Has anyone intalled a Lokar kickdown cable on a C4 trans? I've attached the photo they gave me with it. Will this work coming in from the rear of the tranny? If so - I guess I will have to flip my shifter cable lever upward and bring the cable in from the front. I have a B&M Hammer shifter, wich I installed as they showed in the other photo I've attached. Any thoughts ? ?
I believe mine is flipped as the cable does come in from the front..I will look at it tomorrow and try to reply in the morning....
I had to remove the origional, which is pointed differently. I started installing the same one last Saturday...it's a pita. My problem is that the linkage they provide with the kit ends up in line with my B&M shift cable. I had to bend the bracket slightly to avoid any interference between the two, it looks like it will still work though. Be sure to mock things up and think about the lengths of the throw or pull on the cable before you cut any thing. I didn't cut anything yet cause it looks like there is room under the car for the excess, but I havnt finished...so let us know what you encounter. Again, take the time to think about the cut...
The ford linkage on most C4's is a rod that pushes the kick-down linkage - when you use a cable it pulls the linkage so it has to come in from the back. With the after-market shifter you will have to bend things out of the way to get both to work.
Alright - so both levers will be pointing down, and I'll try to mount things so they do not interefre with each other. Oh yes, blugene good point - i was thinking about the cable cutting too - and leaving the full length, although I don't think they gave me enough of the inner cable so I may have to trim the housing an inch or so. Did you have any interference with your shifter cable and trans cross member? I've got a kink there. Thats another reason I was considering bringing the shifter cable around the front and repositioning the shifter lever upward, that way it will still rotate the same direction. I see a spot on the bell housing where I may be able to mount the cable. PaulS? Possible? Thanks for all the input thus far -everyone!!
If you turn the lever you will have to pull it toward the bell housing. Do you have a way to fasten it to the bell housing bolts?
I am not at the house this week so I cant say forsure, but I think I went through a hole somewhere around the cross member area. I recently replaced it cause it got cooked once on the header and tends to stick. It's good to take your time and consider all the options.
I got this bell housing from a salvage yard, I did not actually see what vehicle it came from. But anyway, there are two threaded (looks like 3/8" holes) on the side- facing the rear.I am going to fabricate a bracket and attempt to reroute the shifter cable to come around the front. I also need to replace the shifter cable, just noticed that its all freyed where it comes thru the floor. I'll have to check the edges around my cut in the floor. Is it a good idea put a grommet in the floor to avoid this ? I'll update you later with my progress - thanks guys! I recently installed the Lokar throttle bracket - see attached.
I have the B&M megashifter... I had to actually grind away at the area towards the front of the shifter hole/opening. The cable angle was extremly affected and caused binding and would cut into the cable if installed without addressing the situation. I used a 1/4" deburing tool, but what ever kind of grinder works. I have them holes in my bellhousing also. I plan on installing my cable as the instructions say myself. Shure wish I had a lift .
I was able to route the shifter cable around the front - made a bracket, used a 3ft B&M super duty cable and slipped a 1200 degree rated sleeve over it because its awfully close to the headers. Installed the Lokar kickdown cable and Lokar throttle cable. I had been dreading this particular part of my project. Mainly because i was clueless on how to go about it, but once I got started and had a plan it went pretty good. Won't know how well it actually all works until I finish my other work. Shifter seems smoother now though rather then routed around back and over the trans crossmember, hopefully the cable will withstand the heat. I also folded the metal back where the shifter cable goes thru the floor to sort of round off the edge(see pics attached). Next on the li$t - cooling sytem, power steering, and ignition.
which one is the kick down cable?....i haven't hooked mine up yet...right now i have my throttle hooked up to the top one.
