if its a 302 id say a good 4bbl intake and carb, headers with dual exhaust.

some gears out back and a shift kit (automatic?) might get things moving quicker too

Do you have any mechanic background?
    What engine do you have?
    What transmission ?
Are you looking to "go racing" or just to cruise to the tunes?
Do you want a lumpy idle?
Are you going to install the parts yourself?

$1000 will get you a good 4bbl carb, intake and headers for a V-8.
You might find an auxillary transmission cooler or timing chain and sprocket set with what is left.
For another $500 you can install a cam and kit as long as it can use stock springs and it isn't a high energy cam. For that kind of cam you will need to modify the heads by having screw-in studs installed. That will be another couple of hundred dollars.
To take advantage of the new higher RPM and horsepower you will need to change the rear gears and that will run a few hundred. You will need to beef up the transmission to take all that new HP so it doesn't burn up and that will cost a few more hundred. for over 300 HP you will need a C4 built and a high stall converter. You will need a BIG cooler on it and a full exhaust system up-grade.

Horse-Power and speed go hand in hand - they both cost money - How fast do you want to spend?

    Thanks for the suggestions

The car is a father son project for my first car, it has a 302, automatic c4, and a 3200 stall as of now, its currently getting painted and getting the dyno don hood scoop installed. I will get back to you with more info next time my dad is around. Thanks again for the suggestions

If the engine is built enough to need a 3200 stall converter then a "little cheap HP" is going to be very hard to come by.
Nitrous system would be the cheapest HP to add and If you do that you will need to put close to $1000 into the C4 to take the nitrous hit.
The C4 will need to have a billet 4 or 6 pinion planetary installed and completely rollerized. You could keep the auto shift valve body or go full manual but if you keep the auto shift then you will want to install a "Z" govenor to allow it to shift auto at 6200 rpm with full throttle shifts.
