    Hello,

I'm beginning to hear an awfully loud squeal or squeak coming from the rear wheel while driving. I'm suspecting its the bearings. I'm going to a show this weekend and it about 50 miles of highway driving. Am I in any danger of the bearings going out and the wheel locking up at high speed? Should I replace the bearings before the trip? Or is it somehting I can deal with afterwards.................

    Thanks!!

If its an axle bearing...Replace it NOW.Pull the drums first and be certain it isnt a piece of broken brake hardware.

Axle bearings when they go out can be very scarey, had it happen once and it locked up the rearend on a corner, I came to a skidding halt and had to clean my pants out afterward.

You can sometimes tell if the axle bearing is going out by lifting the car and putting a pry bar or something under the wheel and seeing if it feels like it moves in the housing.

It could just be a u joint going out they make all kinds of different noises and I would almost bet that is your problem.

    Good luck

If the noise is that bad you need to find and fix it BEFORE you go anywhere ..

I agree with the others. One other squeak I have heard from the rear is the upper shock mount broken from using air shocks. You can generally tell by pushing up and down on the rear of the car making the car bounce if that happens to be it. This squeak would usually only be heard when going over bumps and such. The other type would be heard more consistent as it would be from rolling. Squeaking bearings or brake hardware certainly is a bad thing. Check it quickly.
And yes, could be a u-joint! Another bad thing as the drive shaft could come out while driving...not good.
