The other day I took my maverick out for a ride. I was excelerating from a stop, kind of hard, and was letting off as the automatic transmission shifted into second. Just as the second shift engaged i heard and felt a loud CLUNK almost a Bang. It felt like the clunk was coming form the rear of the car. I drove home under normal excelleration and all seemed ok. I'm about to check u-joints and the differential. Any other ideas?
I've heard of that kind of thing happening when the input shaft doesn't slide in and out correctly , but it was in the case of a 4x4 not sure if that could be happening or not.
Check your U-joints they could be bad. It could also be the ring and pinion gears. Mine is doing the same thing.
Maverick is fixed, front u-joint was bad. the seal went bad on one of the bearing caps and it lost its grease and was just starting to eat the needle bearings. It's amazing that it made such a noise. I replaced both U-joints with Napa 215-0153 performance series u-joints. (Made in JAPAN). Much better Now, back to chirping tires on upshifts.
My local NAPA F***ed me . I did a little work on the mav today to get it ready for a show and as I put the car into reverse I heard a metallic clunk. It turns out that they gave me two front U-joints instead of a front and rear. I guess I should have looked up my parts online I didn't realize the back was different. Destroyed the needle bearings on the ill fitting differential yoke connection. Got a nice U-joint from autozone, solid no grease fitting.
What's Wrong With Greasable U-joints? It's Better To Have The Ability To Lubricate Them So They Will Last Longer.
I have drilled and tapped for grease fittings on u-joints that didn't have them. Just think...you can actually squirt grease in there every few thousand miles and keep it lubed. Just like you do with your engine. Also, if you put too much grease in there, the old grease squirts out and brings any contaminants out with it! what a horrible idea
