what would be the best way to make my maverick faster? its a 250 straight 6 w/ 30K original miles on it. so no engine swaps, what other good ways are there?
By faster are you refering to higher speed or quicker acceleration? The 250 is a very good engine and will perform well for the application it was intended. First make sure it is tuned to perfection then without very heavy and expensive add ons and modifications I would maybe try this: Set the timing up a few degree's and run premium gas, put on a custom exhaust system. Then upgrade the ignition system(the duraspark from Ford is still hard to beat if the advance curve is altered), lastly I would change the rear end gear ratio. Lower for quicker response and higher for top end speed. Just my two cents worth, I would leave the car as is, if it has only 30,000mi on it. Looking down the road a bit, it will be more valuable if it is original. Pick up another Mav or Comet with V8 to use as a hot rod. You must weigh the money angles of redoing yours to just buying another one and having fun with it. My 73 250, will run 90 easy on the highway and yes, it is a bit sluggish off the line with the C4 but it is still fun to drive and I even show it as an original with it's minor flaws etc. Still gets a lot of lookers because Mav's are rare in most places. But if you want to upgrade yours, go for it. It's your car and your decision to make. Good luck either way.
