I recently had my "Manual" Valve body replaced with a Transbrake VB. I asked the tranny guy that if I were to sell the 'old one' (never been used), how the ad should read. He told me, ver batem, "Street/Strip TRANSGO Forward Pattern Manual Valve Body for Ford C4 Transmission. Includes Vacumm Modulator." On another site, someone told me that "Full Manual" valve bodies do not have "vacumm modulators". Personally, I have no idea if they do or not. I replied to him that I did not imply that it was a "Full Manual" Valve body. From what I remember (or was told) is that a "Full Manual" Valve Body actually requires the driver to shift the tranny, whereas a simple "Manual" Valve Body will allow one to put it in "D" and let the tranny shift on it's on AND it will also downshift at any rpm. Will someone please confirm that I am correct in my thinking or straighten me out on the differences? Thx (see http://mmb.maverick.to/showthread.php?t=15228&highlight=valve+body )
rick, if i tell you ,you are "right" then i would be "wrong" but if i tell you that you are "wrong" then you would assume i was "right". ...frank...
Let me take a crack at it Transgo still uses the modulator You do not however have to run a vacume line to it....but manual is manual no matter how they type it out you will still have to shift it manually if you put it in drive it stays in drive. ( I have one of their kits in my C-6) I hope this helps Rick.
I had a '90 Mustang that had a 'Manual' valve body in it (AOD). I have no idea what brand they used. I could shift it as I described - put it in D and let it go through the gears on its on (it would start out in 1st) - or manually up/down shift it any rpm. I'm wondering now if each brand describes theirs differently. I think Frank's onto something.
Rick; I had a manual/automatic valve body, Fairbanks, and it was a real good unit. I could shift it manual or let it go through the gears by itself. Nice thing about it, it had an engineered shift kit in it, and shifted HARD, much better than an aftermarket add on kit. It did have a modulator, and adjustable one.
automatic=shifts on it's own.....manual=you do the up shift and down shift for it..... every manual valve body kit I have ever used works this way not all shift kits are manual some you can go either way with, but if you instal the pieces to make it a manual valve body it will be a manual v-body.
I agree with Robert Regular automatic transmissions shift thru the gears theirself. but you can manually shift them Manual valve body means if you put it in Drive, it starts out in 3rd gear... not first, then second then third. It tries to take off in third. Same as if you put it in second, or first. You have to manually shift it yourself. Will never shift itself.
It's back at my home in Houston. I'll have to remember to look at it when I get back. <--- :ties string on finger:
ditto! i have the transogo kit too.. i had to change to a full maunal cuz the car wouldn't shfit at high RPM when the car went into boost... good think i have a rev limiter when i found out the hard way! the part number is Kit No. 40-3... actually its the same as the basic shift kit... you just use the differant gaskets it comes with and use a couple of differant springs that the kit comes with. good luck
My coan c4 when put into drive will shift through the gears by it's self. However drop it into 1st and it will hold to any speed/rpm until you shift into second manually. However, second gear will shift into third once it hits it's shift point which seems to be 5600rpm and thus far nothing I have done will get 2nd to wind out any farther. Any tips from the tranny experts???? I would really like it to wind to at least 6k maybe as high as 6400rpm. I will probabally end up putting a full manual reverse valve body at the end of this year, but would really like to fix my current shifting problem. I do however like only shifting once while drag racing so maybe if I can solve this quirk I will stick with what I got. Hey you can't miss a shift that way Thanks in advance for any tips or hints. Transmissions of the automatic variety is a weak link in my automotive knowledge and skills. Edit: A tremec doesn't sound bad either
Adjust your modulator, its just a tiny screw on it, screw it in I think... might be out... Either way... screw it one way, see when it shifts, if it works that way keep going until you get the piont you want. If not, turn it the opposite way
