hey i posted a thread and i got some great replies but none of them worked i will explain the problem again hopfully someone can help me.first i checked the battery it is fine checked the starter it is fine changed the battery cables put new selenoid in and i still have to jump the car to get it started i also bought a new alternator . now this time when i jumped my car i turned the key it started to turn over and then i turned the key to the off postion and it kept trying to turn over i took the key out and it was stilll doing it i ordered a new voltage regulator harness and i am, hoping that works any advice would be good thanx
I agree with elliot. I had the exact same thing happen on my '73 a number of years ago, where it kept on cranking even when I pulled the key out. It was the ignition switch. Fortunately it's easy and inexpensive to fix.
I changed the ignition switch in our '72 and it cured a whole bunch of problems. It was very easy to change.
Switch I hsd a '69LTD that stalled everytime I made a left hand turn! After replacing all the common stuff, I took the car to an electric repair shop. Terminals in the ignition switch were shorting. The weight of the KEYS while turning left caused a short turning the engine off!! Later, the headlamps would not turn on, that was a defective dimmer switch. I also had a '74 4 door Maverick that would not start. That was a open fuse wire that runs from the relay to the fuse box. I fixed this one myself! Good Luck! and Welcome! Joe
thanks guys hey thanks guys i changed the ignition switch which was quite easy thanks but still a no go the selenoid clicks but it still doesnt start i have ran out of ideas. there is a little round fuse that attaches to the voltage regulator it has broken off there is one wire running to it but no wires running out any idea what the heck it is i have taken it everywhere and no one knows
Not sure but that little round thing may be just a noise supressor for radio.Recheck ALL of your connections and ground wires. You do have good batt. cables on car?Check that starter is not bound up,that it will spin.Explain again exactly what you have tried and what the car is doing.
If the solenoid clicks you likely have a bad connection or low voltage. The small round device you are referring to is likely the noise supression capacitor also refered to as a RFI Capacitor
bummed alright here goes i have replaced all the battery cables the starter to selenoid cable, changed the selenoid, got the battery checked got a new alternator changed the ignition switch . now when i turn it over the selenoid clicks but does not turn the car over when i hook a booster cable to it it almost turns over but then slows down like it ran out of juice when i remove the booster cables they are hot to the touch .i tried to jump it again and the booster cables litterly caught on fire and i mean flames on both ends of the booster
Did you clean all the surfaces on the ground cables when you hooked them up? Is the engine grounded to the body? Last have the starter checked it may be drawing to much current.
If batt. is good souds like a direct ground somewhere.Souds like you have checked all the right stuff. I am at a loss.
No start: Make sure the shifter is in park. Sometimes linkage gets warn or comes lose. Try starting it in nuteral. When you turc the switch "Start" The relay send all power (amps) directly to the starter. Make sure this is happening. Chech all cables especially the one that goes to the starter. Clean all componet connections with sandpaper. Do you have a good battery? Sometimes lights/radio work but it will not crank the engine. Check by disconnecting your battery and jumpstart with another car. Chech all ground connrctions. Good luck! Joe
Even if your starter is new, that dont mean its any good. Pull the starter out and keep it hooked up tothe solenoid. Put a jumper cable to the neg side of the batter and clamp it to the starter housing. Hit the key and see if it spins. If it does, are you sure your motor is good? Pull the plugs and hook a 15/16 socket on the crank bolt and see if it spins freely.
