The name Maverick comes from Samuel Augustus Maverick. In the 1800's he was a prominent Texas pioneer and statesman. He helped establish the Republic of Texas. In 1845 he took a herd of 400 cattle in payment of a debt. He refused to mark his cattle with a brand. When the cattle wandered off, his nieghbors began calling them mavericks. The name stuck and soon all unbranded, wild cattle were refered to as Mavericks. As to why FORD picked that name for thier car I have no idea. Maybe it was because they had already used the name Mustang and Pinto. Since they seemed to be sticking with animal names associated with livestock, the name Maverick seemed like a good idea. It sounded better than BULL. That idea worked until FORD came up with the Stallion group for the Mustang, Pinto and Maverick. A four legged Mustang or Pinto can both be a Stallion, but a Maverick is by no means a horse, so at least to me calling a Maverick a Stallion always seemed a bit odd.

Probably done that way knowing all the BS stories that would follow decades later.

you know, all those Mavericks that came from the factory with boss 302s, 4 speeds, 9", 351's, etc.

    Thanks for the info.

BTW, the Mustang wasn't named for the horse intially but rather the WWII fighter plane. It just adopted the horse as the official logo

I think the Maverick name plate was used because of the way they marketed the car. The Maverick was to be different from the rest of the cars. The import competitor aganist the VW Bettle. It fit with the Texes theme and live stock. Ford decided to use the Grabber colors from Mustang color chart to promote the Maverick Grabber. Outer space, air planes were also part of product name plate. The Comet was carry over from the 60's Torino, Cougar, were some of the name plates they might have use for the Mustang. The Mustang P51 WWII air plane was the intented meaning for the Ford Mustang until someone carved a horse and used it on a Mustang to make history. Riding a horse or a bull. It just seems right. The "BOSS" is another story!
