just found out after a lot of digging that the guy who sold me the maverick never put the title in his name after buying it and owning it for two years. fed up with paying the owners taxes the guy he bought it from junked the title weeks before i bought it off of ebay. After about 2 months of him telling me he was working on getting the title in my name he stopped answering my calls and emails. since he told me he was a marine vet and was very kind and helpful when i picked it up I figured he was just going through hard times so i let it be and left him a voicemail telling him to get back with me as soon as possible. after about 7 months i finally had it and went to the court house to see what i needed to put it in my name and after waiting for a while in line i found out that the title was notarized and ready to be sighned over but was never sighned by the buyer. since in the glorious state of Kentucky a bill of sale is no longer valid as a purches recipt I couldnt sighn it over even if i proved i bought it off of ebay. when i left i tried calling the guy i bought it from and no answer. then i tried from a different number and finally he mysteriously answered. after explaining to him how upset i was and that i wanted my money back he told me he wouldnt pay me back and he never answerd becouse he was in jail. I told him i would just contact ebay and get my money back and he could pay ebay then hung up. after cooling down I called him back and told him that if he found the original owner and got him to sighn it over to me then all would be forgiven. magically about 1 hour later i was talking to the original owner and found out that after he sold it to the guy I bought it from he sighned the title and notorized it to be transfered in his name but never transfered it and after waiting a year he had it and just junked the title since he didnt want to pay taxes on a car he no longer owned. what i thin happened was that the guy i bought it from found out the title was junked and didnt want to give me back the money for the car and waited till the 90 day period was up for ebay so he would have to pay me back and since ebay wouldnt help and he wasnt paying me back i was screwed. after i talked to ebay and let them know the situation the next day we get an email from the guy i bought it from stating that it was my fault for never getting the title put in my name. I tryed calling him numerous times trying to work somthing out with him to see if we could trade parts for another car i have and no answer... thankfuly the origonal owner he bought it from has been nice enough to help me get it put in my name but it sucks that he is going to get away with doing what he did. next time i will be a little smarter and less trust worthy when i buy a car. I was origonaly going to sell it but didnt want to till i had the title in my name sorry to all who were interested. afetr all of this i am just going to keepit, fix it and drive it if i get iot in my name. she didnt want to leave me.
A valuable lesson here. Dont just look at a title when buying a car, verify the VIN number on the title matches the vin number on the data plate. Had that happen once.
He had a title after waiting 7 mos., but had issues w/ State DMV getting it changed in his name -- unless I missed something in the post. I bought my car from the owner who lived in Wisconsin, he never had the title changed from the owner B4 him, who lived in Georgia . In the state of Illinois, all I had to do was present a valid title, pay the transfer fee and hit the road. I was reluctant on buying the car cuz of the title not in the guy's name I bought the car from as I was not that familiar w/ this issue. My brother convinced me that wud not be an issue in our state -- and it wasn't.
My '76 had the dashboard removed for cowl repair when I bought it. I was very suspicious of the dash VIN tag and matched to door frame before handing cash. Unfortunately Title issues and laws vary widely state to state and the interpretation even with legitimate documents is often arbitrary in a local DMV. I bought a car trailer from son of old car guy who was institutionalized after failing health and senses. DMV's interpretation: without signed-over TITLE and because trailer had been registered in past 10 and was "in system", a replacement title to legally transfer ownership was only available with the Drivers License of last owner . The sympathetic seller found no documents from his dad and he hadn't used his license in years. I was only able to license trailer as a "Homebuilt" with alternate new VIN . Neighboring CT and Penn. have totally different DMV laws from NY on Motorcycle TITLE transfer as many of my friends find out... have fun
I called the DMV about a Mav. I was looking at to buy. the lady told me after I buy it to call and give her the vin# and Ins. Co. info. and she would send me the title and registration... I asked if she needed proof of purchase and she said no... I had a personalized tag once and when I went to get the year sticker they told me the tag belonged to a lady in the next town. I told her I just got it the last year. she brought up the lady's info deleted it, then replaced it with my info...
Wow, now could be said the other person is operating on stolen plates... In VA you would have gotten "tough luck Charlie, pick another plate"... I put in for personalized plate "NO" a few years back, then a couple months later we started getting parking tickets in the mail from Arlington VA... Seems their parking ticket guy was writing NO on any ticketed vehicle that didn't have a plate... One was for a US Mail truck... It drew a lot of attention with people pointing and taking pict, after a couple years I let it go...
my point...I could have given your vin# and gotten a title, registration, and tag for your car in my name...
got some good news. the original owner found a way to get a new title and sign it over in my name. he explained the whole situation to the lady at the court house and she said selling the vehicle in someone else s name in Kentucky is the same as theft and it would only cost six dollars and three days to get a new one for him. we sign it over thursday YAY. time to start this long awaited project. only thing left to do is find all the parts i need.
i guess it depends on who you talk to. Ive run into some that were very willing to help and solve the issue and some who just tell you no unless your ready to fork out a bunch of cash. just found out that the blue book value for a 71 grabber six banger is $6,650 and if i wanted to transfer the title without proof of sale that it would cost 10% of the blue book value for taxes witch comes to $665 bucks.. sheesh
Sorry you had such a bad time. At least God knows the story an everything worked out for you. Good luck on the project.
thank you sir.. gonna keep the inline six in it, switch to disc brakes and fix the rust and wireing then drive the inline till it dies then switch to a 302 or 289.
