    parts number?

well, i went to midas and the guy told me the size is 1 and 3/4 inches. he also informed me that i need to get a round muffler in order to not go thru hell installing it. i went to pep boys and they didn't know their heads from their headers so i am resorting to asking you geniuses, what is the part number for a flowmaster 40 series that will fit a maverick. and if a 40 series wont fit, then which aggresive sounding muffler from flowmaster will(and the number for it) please help me!!

The smallest Flowmaster inlet and outlet listed is 2-1/4" in 40 and 50 series. The Flowmaster Deltaflow 40 series is 2" in and out. There are 3 in/out configurations. Offset in and out, center in and out and offset in - center out. There part numbers are Jeg's 389-942043, 942040 and 942041 respectively.
The shop should be able to expand a new pipe or use an adapter to 2" inlet. The out let can be the 2" size. As far as mounting to the hangar, have an adapter made to do this. The muffler size is 4 thick by 9-3/4 wide by 13" long. If the shop can't handle the job go to another.
Another muffler you may consoder is the Dynomax Magnum Glasspack 1-3/4" in and out, round about 5" by 17" long. Part 289-24210 from Jeg's.
The exhaust shop has to be at least a little help in going beyond just working with stock replacement parts. Hope this helps get you in the right direction. Good luck. Like a lawyer, $5 for the part and $100 for the advice. ;)

If your going to upgrade the muffler, it is not too much more to do the pipes too. The difference in flow would be worth it.

Truthfully what you are talking about is small potatoes on a 70 mav with a 6 cyl. A muffler upgrade with no other upgrade will make you sound great, but will not do a whole lot in the performance sector by itself. Tell us what it is that you are looking acomplish with this...do you want performance, or sound?

i know that no muffler in the world could do a lot for any car, and i don't expect to gain 50 hp. I am going to install a new engine in the near future, and i simply wanted to know if there is any difference in performance or just look.

I've got a '73 with a 302 and it has single exhaust with muffler before and after the rear axle. Kinda like running with a cork up your ass. I plan to upgrade to dual exhaust next weekend. I'm going to go with 2 1/4" pipe with some cheap turbos. My engine is still stock. Make sure you make that car breath a little better.

    FINALLY!!!

Man that was really testing to my patience. Well it turns out the guys at my local Pep Boys ARE idiots and i had to order it on-line. But i finally got the EXACT stuff i wanted. my 40 series muffler and a big bore monza exhaust tip 3.5 outlet at the tip. Now i have to be patient again and hope tht the delivery is on time and accurate. well, ill keep you guys posted and try and show you pics of the final product. i am replacing the down and mid pipes as one of you suggested (always had it in mind) and we shall see how the car sounds feels and smells :). I hopefully attached an image of the tip im putting on the muffler, it's the longer of the two.
