I took the pan partway off the Mav and verified that indeed the crank is broken in some way. It is right behind the journal where the two forward most piston rods connect (I never remember which way they are numbered...I am thinking they are #1 and #4?). From what I can see the counterweight for the journal right behind the first one is broken all the way across. If I push the end of the crank in and out everything in front of the break moves at least a half inch. Yeah, when the endplay is supposed to be around .008, that would have been a clue! I am not super upset about it all. The motor gave me almost 20 years of service. I, like some others really got my Mav Mojo back as well...the car has pretty much sat for the last 2 years or so. I am really inspired now...if I can keep a flow of $$ to the project, there will be some more cool mods done to the Mav before next Roundup/Gathering time, in addition to a new motor.
If you want to just get it back together....I have a used crank from my motor. Didn't need it when I went with the 347 crank.
Atleast you saved the block. Im not positive, but Dave (Old Guy) used to have several stocker cranks already turned at his shop. Im not sure if he's sold them or scrapped them or anything, but they no longer run stock stroke motors, so he might have one for you at a reasonable price.
that will be great... i know we had some nice...Daily Drivers...this year...and Marks was one of them..
Thanks for the offers guys. I will hang onto them and if next summer starts to get to close without any hope of a new motor getting together I will certainly start looking into swapping the crank. Putting in a stroker motor (probably 331) is something I have wanted to do for a long time. The weak links in my car have always pretty much been in the driveline (even running outta gas was loosely connected to that...the car was only getting about 9 or 10 mpg on the highway at that time!) The Maverick gods have determined that NOW apparently is the time....
