Finally found out who owned a junkyard that I've known about for over 20 years. Lots and lots of old stuff. The old man put his first car on there in 1948. I talked to him last week but the weather was crap so I said I'd come back because I was looking for some Maverick stuff. He said he knew he had one on the lot. Went back today and he pointed it out through the trees--stacked on top if some kind of rust bucket. Then he said "I think they made one called a Grabber too, I've got one of those over on the east side"--------Imagine what I was thinking! The regular Maverick had a decent logo gas cap so I added that to my first find of the day. Then I made my way through the brush to track down the Grabber. Sure enough, there it was! Four lugs so I knew it was an older one. Lime green with the Grabber stripe down the side. The hood however was white as well as the back deck lid but both were covered 6" in leaves. I can't tell you how I felt as I crossed my fingers and brushed away the leaves. Just a plain hood-----rats! Same thing on the back end, just a plain deck. Evidently someone had swapped them out sometime in the past. However, it did have a pretty decent deluxe gas cap back there Two treasures to add to my day's finds! --Lo and behold there's a remote sport mirror on the driver's side but the mirror was broken but it still functioned, had the bezel and the gasket. Treasure number three! I also picked up the reclining seat levers while I was there. Number four! We ended up talking for about an hour after that and he gave me a lead on another yard about an hour away that has not crushed as well. (I've learned that these guys in this business know all the other "old timers in all sorts of places). Anyway, it was a pretty fun afternoon. I'm going to keep my nose in the wind and follow every lead I can. Eventually I'm going to run across one in one of these old yards or see something parked under a tree on one of these backroads. I'll probably put all the stuff on our classifeds once they're cleaned up a bit for now however I'm just going bask in a successful hunt.
Sounds like an adventure. I see headlight bezel(s), sill plate(s), hood lip trim, radius rods... Oh, I also think the early Grabbers didn't have the hood and spoiler... I think.
I believe the scooped hoods were a '71-'72 option. Gene's right, there are a bunch of parts on the one in the picture still to be had! Congrats on the find, -Scott H.
-the "Grabber hood" was standard equipment with the Grabber option in '71-'72. All Grabbers had them in '71 & '72 (the 1970 grabber did NOT have it, nor did any Grabber from '73-up). -All '70-73 Grabbers had rear spoilers -All '70-75 Grabbers had sport mirrors
What's the best way to tell what year it is? I remember years ago a year being stamped in the taillight lenses? Drivers door was stuck shut so I couldn't get a look at the VIN in the door jamb. I'm heading back to the yard sometime soon and grab the hood trim piece. It did have a 1/2" sized smooth dent in it near the center. I'm also going to be going back through there for every sport mirror I can find. I installed two from a Torino on my car a couple of years ago and am hard pressed to tell the difference. If anybody's looking for something in particular let me know. I'll have my crappy phone camera to take pics.
A factory Boss 302 Shelby Maverick? Sorry, couldn't resist! Seriously, any leads on Comet parts would be appreciated by several members on here I guarantee. -Scott H.
I think the grabber had a pretty decent black door passenger side panel in it. The driver's side was gone.
