So I'm driving down the street and I think I hit a dip a lil bit too hard... I hear this loud creaking and cracking from the back of my car and immediately think (oh crap, I hope what I've been reading about on the maverick boards didn't just happen to me) so I drive to my buddy's house. He gives me a flashlight and I get underneath the car and look at the shocks AND ain't life grand, the rear shock is out of place.. like a little bit "downward" of where it usually is.. After a closer look, turns out that the piece of metal the shock is bolted to dislodged from the rest of the underbody... So I have a question for you all... Should I just cut out all that metal and weld in a new thick one? Or should I just weld that piece back to the rest of the car? Any help would be 'ed

Nah, no rust underneath it at all! I got some stock replacements as well.. The only part that has rust on my car is by the rear passenger window, OH and some in the underside of my trunk lid. But none around the shock mount area! And OH MAN I was so freaked out the whole ride home.. To make matters worse this cop was screwing with me. He would drive behind me, speed up and drive along side me, then slow down and get behind me again. I was like "OH CRAP HE KNOWS I DON'T HAVE INSURANCE!". But yeah, kinda sucky night :/

We all have discussed this happening with air shocks, but never hear about it happening with regular stock replacements. Get us some pictures. I am sure a 10 minute welding job would have it back to "better-than-normal"...

I have that section of a car that I can bring up to you with the quarter panel, if you like. Please post pictures of the damaged area so I know exactly what you need. Do you have access to a welder? This should be a relatively easy fix if the damage is what I think it is.

Sorry to hear about your bad luck........Now would be a GREAT time to add the much needed support.....I would run angle iron from frame to frame just for the shock mounts

Now you have a good excuse to part that car out and get yourself a 2-door...;)

On my first Sprint the passenger side shock mount broke with just stock shocks.
That metal is so thin up there that I would take hotrod-daddy's advice and run a crossmember.

I didn't know when mine broke.
I just noticed a ding-ding sound all the time.
Went on for a week or so and I finally climbed under to see what it was.
It was the shock bouncing around and hitting the axle tubes or something. I was young and no access to a welder or money, so I just unbolted the shock and 'let it eat'... ;)
Drove like that for a long time.
I wouldn't recommend it now that I am much older and wiser, but...

It's only 36 years old, I can't believe that would happen.

So, once again, don't you guys have an angled(sorta Z-shaped) piece of channel iron along the back seat, where your shocks mount? I originally thought it just mounted to the sheet metal, but last time I got under there, I found the extra layer of channeling.

I took off the air shocks fearing that it would pop through, but when I was installing the caltracs, I paid a little more attention to the top mount, and saw that it was pretty heavily reinforced...
