I saw a 72 comet about 5 years back that was a red orange color with side stripes, hoodscoop, and a 200-6. I asked the guy if I could buy it; he said $500. Anyways, It wasn't a GT, the stripes are the same but there is no 'comet gt' on the fenders. It was really rusty and hadn't been repainted. The guy said it wasn't a GT and that it was original. Maybe it was a unique dealer add-on. Anybody else seen one like this? Mike
A dealer will put on anything if you pay him enough. IT could be the guy just had the dealer add the stuff to a stock Comet. I'll bet the stripes were painted.
In the early 80's when a lot of people would have been painting these cars it was difficult to find a set of original stripes. Some people who reproduced or made stripes, were willing to make stripes that looked like the factory stripes, but back then the technology would not have been around to easily duplicate 'COMET GT' as now. I have seen one set on a GT like that. They easily could have ended up on a non-GT car. I doubt that the factory put them on, dealer maybe. Come to think of it, the Shelby Europa 250 Comet does not appear to have 'Comet GT' in it's stripe. If you want more info on that, you will have to send Craig $20 to read an upcoming issue of Shorthorns. Pics are included. Seth
That could very well be alright. I know they weren't painted on, they were vinyl. Somebody must have wanted it to look like a GT because it had the scoop with the antiglare black around it. It was funny because I asked him if it was a '71 (I had never seen one at that time and it was before I had the internet) I thought maybe they didn't have the "comet gt" on the stripe the first year.
