It's a C4 and the numbers on the case are "C8AP-7006A----4"
It also has the numbers "7H17"
Can anyone tell me what year, etc tranny this is?

So, what is the 7H17? Nothing important?

So, then it is a '68 C4. Can you tell me any specifics or do I have to count the splines and all that fun stuff? I'm just trying to get a torque converter and want to get the correct one.

steve, it's a 1968. parts numbers beginning with a c are from the 60's. beginning with a d are the 70's, e is 80's. second number is the year. if you have a 68 transmission make sure you order the convertor for the 66-69 years. it has a 24 spline input shaft. in 1970 they changed to a 26 spline input shaft.

Steve, just a thought on your tranny. If you are going to race the car or are pushing a lot of HP and torque etc, I would go to the later 26 spline input tranny for a bit more reliability.

I'm not planning on going all out with this motor and trans. This one is gonna be for the street. I'll eventually be building one with more horses and torque and I've got the original '72 tranny still that I can rebuild.
