im in the stages of buying a floor shifter for my 72 mav and i want to delete the colum shifter is it possible i have a stock c4 and do i need anying to do the swap? any help will do !
Get a shifter that will work with a C4. It should have instructions on how to install it. It will come with a bracket to install on the transmission that will support the new shifter cable. You'll have to drill holes to mount the shifter to the floor and one hole to pass the cable through. You'll have to cut the carpet around the shifter also. You'll have to wire up the shifter's Reverse-Light-Switch if you want the reverse lights to come on when you back up. Under the hood you'll want to remove the linkage that runs from the column to the transmission. What you do with the original column is up to you. Some people remove the "p-r-n-d-2-1" indicator along with the arm. Then grind off the mounting tabs. Others replace the whole column with one from an original floor shift car. Rocco
I just did this on my daughters 72 MAV 302/C-4. Used a BM shifter (If I could do it anyone can). The instructions were clear, get a good hole cutting bit for your drill. I did it with a dreml tool not pretty carpent covers it take goodness. As for the colum I removed the gear shifter leaver and PRND12 then mounted a tach center on the colum. Worked out great. You don't have to do either one of these things. Just get a "sleeve" from a column that came from a floor-shift car and put that on. That is what I did. There is no reason to swap the entire column unless your original is bad...
I used a B&M shifter too. They have a nice website where you can actually view the installation instructions for different models so you know what to expect. Also -How do you replace the column sleeve - I would like to do that too. If anyone has a nice column sleeve from an original floor shifter Mav - I need one.
Ya just gotta scour the junkyards. Check Mavericks, Comets, Pintos, Mavericks, Some Granadas had 'em, and Mustang-IIs. And actually, any Late '60s/early '70s Fords & Mercurys with floor shifters have the type sleeve you need. As for "how to" do it, I am going from memory here, but you have to remove the steering wheel, the lock cylinder, the snap-ring (don't break it or lose it), the turn signal switch, and the attaching bolts that hold the old sleeve on. Reverse the process for installing the other sleeve...
how big should the hole be and is the linkage hard to connect because i brought the hurst v matic for my mav
The hole for the BM shifter only needs to be about 3/4 of an inch. The key is correctly locating the postion for the cable hole. Use a drill hole cutting bit. good luck
