Hi guys. Just a newbie looking for info. Just posted in the new members area, but thought I'd jump in here in case not everybody reads the new member posts. I have a 8" rear end out of a '74 Comet that I'm trying to put new axle seals in. The seals the parts house sold me have a 2-1/4" diam. but the housing measures 2-5/16". Did they use a different housing for the 5 lug axles with a bigger diam. seal? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

I ran into this about a month ago. I originally had a 4-lug housing in my 71 and had purchased seals for it. RockAuto and Timken both listed 9161 for the 4-lug and 3214 for the 5-lugs. I have since purchased a 5-lug rear and when I went to install seals, the 5-lug seals were WAY too small, and the 4-lugs were larger, almost as if the listings were switched. Upon further investigation, I found that others here on the site were using 9569S. I got a pair of those and everything fit perfectly.

Hi Paul. Thanks for the quick response. The seals that I got are the 9569S seals. the O.D. of those seals is 2-1/4". The axle housing is 2-5/16". Just a little too much slop in that fit to suit me.;) You mentioned that you had seals for a 4-lug that were too big. That may be the one I need since the 9569S is too small. Do you happen to know what the outside diameter was on the 9161 seals. I'll get on the Timken site and see if they give the specs for that seal. Thanks again.

check rockauto.com, they're pretty good with their listings. they have the TIMKEN 9161 seal for the 4-lug application, listed with 2.312" outer diameter. sounds like this is the one you need!

    NAPA's 13419 is also 2.316 OD... That's for a '72...

Thanks for the input guys, but both the Timken 9161 and the NAPA 13419 are for a 1.326" shaft size and my axles are 1.375". Still looking!!

Their listings in the case of the 71 4-lug and 77 5-lug were way off from what the real-world applications were. At first I thought I had gotten the seals mixed-up, but I checked both invoices and they traced back to the right applications. Timken's site was the same. Not sure what's going on.
