the 302 and 351 headers are different. i think some guys have used a spacer. but i think the cheapest way is to get a new set. tubular makes headers for a 351 in a maverick and i'm sure a couple of other companies do too.:)

Tubular has small tubes that go right in. 1.5" tubes.
Hooker has 6208s, they take a little work to get in. 1.75" tubes.
Crites just came out with some 1.75" tube headers. They have had nothing but positive comments. Not as much work as the Hookers, but same price.
If you have the 302 Mav manifolds, they have been known to work as well.

The 1.625" headers you have now (I assume, that is most common size), will bolt to the engine, but not in the car.
Shaving the towers only gets you room to change plugs. Doesn't aid header fitment.
Folks have used the 302 headers, but with lots of beating pipes, remaking a few, and other such mods.
    Personally, I wouldn't bother with 302 headers.

i know the 302 headers fit 351w with out a prob the question is by shaving the towers will that give me enough room dew to the width of the 351w to put the motor in there without using the stock manifolds

the 351w will fit in the engine compartment without shaving the shock towers. the shaved towers make the spark plug changes a lot easier. have you tried summit for the balancer?:)
