    Hi alll,

So I have a 250 straight-six in my '71 Mav. I was wondering if I could swap the torque converter I have for something with a little more zip. I figured while I'm down cleaning the transmission and replacing the seals I might as well see what else I can mess with.

    Thanks,
    Nick

Sure can, bell housing is same as 302 so as long as the converter has the 10.5" stud spacing should not be a issue... Converters for the 26 spline C4 are plentiful, I'd go with something like a 2400...

Summit has a house brand 10" by Boss Hogg that's listed as a 2400-2800 should be right at the low end on a 250... I have one waiting to go in my Comet...

Get a shift kit....leave the torque converter.

A shift kit you will feel, even on a 250. A torque converter on a 250-6 is a waste of money in my opinion.

Have you ever driven a vehicle with a little higher than stock converter??? The difference from dead stop will generally feel like you've added a extra cylinder or two... Of course on a mostly highway driven vehicle without lockup trans, it's going give a hit in fuel mileage, plus should add a aux cooler to be safe... Like the old saying, if you're gonna play, ya have to pay...

Shift Kit is a good idea but isn't going to increase torque multiplication, really should be added anytime the trans is freshened...

BTW I did a little checking and looks like the 164 tooth flex plate for a 4.6 is zero balance and would work on a 250(actually I have a 4.6 flex laying out in the garage)... Assuming 250 & 302 use same plate to crank pattern(302 & 4.6 do), whats this means is there is a commonly avail plate that would allow mating a AOD to a 250... There are at least two different ones with different converter bolt dimensions, the one I have was left over after swapping a trans in one of my Grand Marquis to one with a smaller converter pattern...
