well i went and did it i am going to call my 72 terminal and let it go in peace and turn it into a donor. but as in life as one comes to a end another is born again i went and found a 77 LDO maverick on craigs list the guy wanted 850 but i got him to take 600 delivered to my house (less then 50 miles away). the front fenders torque boxes and floors are solid only a small amount of rust in a front fender apron (Compared to my 72) and lower rears have some but not to bad and the vinyl top has a couple dings but i didn't find any bumps like rust in it. 250 with a c4, power disks and steering and factory electronic ignition and 15" wheels on it. (all things i wanted for the 72) the motor wouldn't start but with a clear filter we could see it wasn't getting any fuel oh yea said it has a new tank looked clean color is dark brown not the purple it looks like in pic.
Might want to pull out the heater box and driver's vent and reach up in there and make sure all those pine needles didn't end up inside the cowl. Nice score.
there is a small build up of them in there. i was thinking of making a opening in the upper portion of the cowl below the hood line to reach in and get that out. and while preping to work on mavericks a couple months ago i got a good cowl from a 74 top and bottom. also planning to make a cover for that opening.
oh yea can anyone tell me were i can find some paint in the saddle tan to clean up the inside the rear seat side panels are so faded they are gray and i would like to change to a manual tranny and my steering is black
Saw this car in person ...almost bought it. Glad to see my someone I know rescued it, even more glad to hear you got it for what I offered him and he turned down , even got it delivered! I kind of liked the dark chocolate brown color with white.
Looks like a nice car. Nice that it is an LDO. I too, really like the color combo. Hopefully the cowl is still OK ... maybe just a windshield leak. If it does need a cowl, this does look like a car that really warrants fixing right from what you show so far. I went back into your gallery to look at your other car ... this is definitely a great move up. As a side note ... as bad as your early front bumper is on your donor ... don't write it off. This place in GA that Frank discovered could fix that good as new. I used to walk past bumpers worse than that ... no more now.
as Craig suggested....pulling heater box is a lot less work if the cowl is good... X2 ... even if you have big hands. Take the passenger seat out too. Better that doing the "upside-down in the seat routine" ... (that was easy when I was 25) I completely missed the perfect dash pad and lower dash in great shape when first looking at the pics. NICE! Hard to find here .... those get baked in the heat here.
thanks all thanks for the encouragement and i don't think the cowl is gone i was only talking of opening the front of it to get the long pine needles out these are the ones that are like 6-9" long in there and there are not a whole lot just if they turn trying to rinse them out i could be digging with a wire for a long time. even if the cowling is rotted i have a secret weapon a whole good cowling leaning against the garage that i cut off at the a posts and about 2" down the fire wall. don't worry about the bumpers i already told big on the forum they are off limits. although i seen a thread on here were some one cut down a big bumper for the front and tucked them in. i think i would like to give that a try first. i like the idea of the smaller square tube look then the triangle of the 72. sorry that dash does have 2 cracks in it. i think they were straight ones and not spider webbed out. when i looked at this i didn't worry to much about that type of thing i just wanted to make sure i had a good base to start from this time. i am sure to fix the frame on the 72 would of ended up costing more then the $600 i paid for the 77 and to add power disks, power steering, and a fuse box out at the front of the dash that felt like i got the cake too
up date well for the last week i have been cleaning and inspecting. not sure where the moisture is coming from but the cowl looks fine with the heater and both vents gone. so far the only new rust is a small streak about 2" x 6" by the dimmer switch but do not see or feel a leak in the cowl with vent removed.front pass floor looks mostly like the stuck batting from the carpet is most of the red. back seat area and tranny tunnel both look new even in paint coloration. when the guy delivered it he says i have bad news the tranny is leaking then i asked how he got it on the trailer he said he drove it ( a runner thank goodness). but that tranny most be almost empty by how hard it was to get in the driveway. yesterday i replaced the leaking power steering line the weak fuel pump cleaned the coil and installed the sending units and a set of temped in gauges under the dash. as i am inspecting this car i find little suprises all over the place. a good dash speaker not all faded or brittle, a sound battery box under the too wide battery. and the condition of the rear passenger area. bad finds are the fact it did take a bad hit behind the drivers door and that bondo is giving way. so that may mean a whole new rear panel instead of the piece behind the rear wheel. well that is all for now try for cheap camera pics soon. getting blurry now 4 hours sleep and a ten hour day and still need to do last weeks bills with a house full of grandkids yuck.
haven't given up just slow well i got some of those cheap pictures finally and have gotten some small things fixed.
