New steering wheel horn problem

    I am installing a new Grant wooden steering wheel in my 71 Comet GT. I know I have all the parts installed right, exactly according to directions, but the horn continues to blow when I reconnect the battery. It must be something else. I notice there are two small spring-loaded pins protruding out of the steering column that are depressed when the parts are installed. I suspect this may be part of the problem... or might it be something else? Some of you have already solved this one, so help me out... thanks!

    Along with the new wheel, do you have the horn kit that looks something like this?

    Without the horn kit the 2 spring loaded contacts just short out to blow the horn all the time.

    I seem to remember having to clean the open area between the concentric rings on the adapter once. I think arcing or crud was a problem there.

    Also, as you press the horn button onto the horn assembly, you have to put it on so that it just covers that top plate. There has to be a gap there. If you push it on too far, it will contact the steering wheel and the horn will be on all the time.

    As you install it, that top plate is some kind of fiber construction where the indents in the horn button grab it. Repeated installation chews that up. To prevent that from happening, I try to install that button clocked the same way each time, and then give it a slight turn to lock it in place.

    I have found Grant horn buttons to frequently be problematic. It is a good reason to use a horn relay. That way only a small amount of amperage is going through the button if it goes bad... less fire risk.
