My 73 has a sloppy tranny, looking on the CL to find used ones in $100 range. What number of splines exist on the output shaft? I found a 73 Mustang trans with 28. Is this correct for Maverick as well? I've heard (on another thread) 70 and up are only 26. When did they move to 28 or was poster mistaken?

i believe all the rear shafts are the same. the input shaft changed from 24 to 26 in 1970. i used the same driveshaft for both.:)

Got it. I read his post wrong, then, didn't get that he was talking about the input shaft. Thanks, Don. Wish me luck.

good luck. i found this out the hard way. when i went to put the torque convertor back in it didn't fit. so i had to order a 26 spline convertor. :)

    Taxi Rob,
Why not rebuild your C4 and make it stronger?
For a couple of hundred bucks you can build a C4 that will handle 400 HP and shift with authority doing it. Getting a C4 for $100 and using it seems like you are inviting disaster by getting what is essentially a core tranny and trying to use it as is. There is instructions here: http://mmb.maverick.to/showthread.php?t=35487 on how to do it step by step and I will assist in any way that I can. If you can rebuild an engine you can rebuild a C4.

    still haven't got to it..

You know, I would consider doing that, but it's not that big a deal. My purpose for the Maverick was to save it from the crusher, to get it running and pass it on. Of course, I thought at first about selling my Comet and keeping the Maverick, but I just have too much into the Comet to give it up now, finally got a stereo and a new grille installed. Do I need another V8 car next to my Crown Vic? OPEC would love it, but I'm happy with my straight six. BTW, I'm gonna keep the core from the Mav in case the Comet trans craps out, I might ask for a tutorial sometime down the road. Thanks for the offer, Paul.

    Taxi Rob,
Anytime you need help just let me know. It is always easier to build one when you have plenty of time. Don't wait until the working tranny goes out.
