    Hi Everyone,

I am using the Motorcraft FL1A oil filter on my 302. I saw a guy with a 302 in a '32 Ford. In order to clear the frame rail he has a shorter oil filter. He wasn't around so I couldn't ask him what kind it was.

Does anyone know of a shorter oil filter that will fit a 302? I could use it for space issues myself. I went to Advance and they don't carry anything with the same specs as the FL1A, except shorter.

A friend of mine used to use a filter for a 383 Dodge! I would look it up on Wix or someone elses website to make sure the antisiphon valve and relief valve is the same. He never had a problem, but that doesn't mean it's right!:)

P.S. I do know the threads and the seal were correct!

Stick with the larger filter. It is in essence giving you another half quart oil capacity.

I use the largest filter I can fit on all my cars. Luckily, my mav and Dodge truck both accept the motorcraft fl1a

What space issues are u referring? I have ps, ac, orig coolant resv and windshield resv. and don't have any issues when changing the filter. There are issues if one wants to change it by not going under the car. I only change it once or twice a year, so not big deal. I agree w/ Scooper - stay w/ big filter. JMO.

When I was running that other brand engines, I used the pickup filter for more capacity. The more the better.

I'm not telling you to run a filter, or not run a filter, but the Fram 3651 is the same as the FL-1A or the PH-8A, just shorter. A friend of mine once put a 351C in a '64 Fairlane, and had to run a shorter filter, because of a clearance issue.

I have done the same thing in the past. Fram PH8A is the normal size. The problem with the dodge filter is that its the same diameter as the PH8A its only shorter. If you want real small the PH3814 will work and is real small. Its the same diameter as the sealing oil ring on the block. I have used the PH3814 in the past for about 3 years with no problems. If you cut all three filters open you will find that all the media inside is the same.

I run a mustang oil cooler (sandwich style) that bolts onto the stock filter location and I use a FL-300 filter spec'd for the 4.9l 6 cyl. same mounting specs just shorter. It reduces capacity by less than 1/3 quart.
