Oil Filter Removal - This is embarrassing.

    Changing the oil in my Maverick for the first time and can’t get the filter out of the car! Came off no problem but it is too large in diameter to make it through and of the oaths to get it out. Car is a 302 with power steering. I thought I could get it through the gap under the car between the shock tower and the power steering lines but it’s about 1/2” too larger to go through. Is there something I’m missing?

    I have power steering and never had that problem. You may have to cut/bend/destroy that one to get it off. Got any pictures?

    I thought about destroying it to get it out but the replacement filter is the same size so seemed pointless. I will figure out how to add a couple pictures.

    Never had that problem either, what filter are you using I use a Ford fl1a . If you cant get it out without destroying it you could get a different filter to put back in or you could pull one bolt on the drivers side motor mount and lift engine a touch

    It comes off the block no problem but it does not drop out of the space in the chassis. While I was taking the pictures I noticed a long dent in the side of the filter that I was able to line up and with a lot of persuasion force the old filter out.

    I am using Motorcraft FL1A and getting it in was a pain and resulted in a few dents. I don’t think jacking the motor will change anything. Is the the area it’s supposed to come out or am I missing something ?

    You couldn't remove the P/S hose bracket & drop it out?

    The FL300('87-'88 Turbo Coupe) is a short version of the FL1, plus the smaller diameter FL400s used on Aerostar fits.

    I don't have the stock Ford steering setup now, but, when I did, don't recall the hoses mounted like that w/ the metal bracket as shown. I believe someone made some mod's to your car --- I never had an issue using stock size filter.

    It'll come out. Just have to get the right angle to fit past the power steering hoses. If it went in, it'll come out...

    Take out the bolt for the power steering hose clamp and move them aside. Reinstall when done and go enjoy the ride! Screenshot_20210706-042023_Samsung Internet.jpg

    My SSP 5.0 has the oil cooler and uses the shorter filter. I run into this same problem every time I change the oil. As RMiller noted, I just remove the one bolt, and drop the lines.
