i dont remember taking one off but my assembly guide here says an oil slinger goes over the crank ontop of the timing gear before the cover and balencer go on. the timing chain and everything was already on this engine when i got it but im replacing the front cover with one that allowes me to use a mechanical fuel pump
Its a washer that gets sandwiched between the crank gear and the harmonic balancer.its more elaborate than just a washer though.
When I converted my 5.0 to carb ... I paid the hefty sum of $3 at the local Ford dealer who still had an NOS slinger in stock ... they are long obsolete ... best bet is to get one out of the junkyard .... http://cgi.ebay.com/NOS-Oil-Slinger...ryZ33616QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
is it just me or is the pic i posted not showing up? here it is again... i have no memory of ever seeing one of those on the motor
The oil slinger ... slings oil on the eccentric for the mechanical fuel pump ... if your engine did not have a mechanical fuel pump to start with ... it wouldn't of had a slinger ...
The oil slinger is designed to keep most of the oil away from the seal. This eliminates seal seepage if pressure developes in the crankcase. The eccentric gets oil from splash off the chain and sprockets.
Perhaps ... But I bet it gets a lot more from the slinger .... and explains why only mechanical fuel pump engines have them ...
Ford made the part for a reason. If it was me I'll be looking for one if you have a mechanical fuel pump.
i ran a few searches on summit and couldnt find anything and i searched ebay and the only think that poped up was the link dan posted. am i searching for the wrong name or something?
