I have a 200 I6. What oil would work the best? I dont have a chiltons or any owners manuals to inform me so I have just been using whatever. Now today I checked the oil and it smelled different than every other time Ive checked it. I dont really know how to describe the smell.

    "Burned"?

'Might be time to change it.

You could get 20 different recommendations from 20 different board members on which oil to use.

I would use one oil brand and stay with it.

From a Techinician at Southwest Research Institute in San Antonio, Texas who headed a test on motor oils, told me that all the 'known' brands are good oils. Some additives (i.e. detergents) do not mix well with others and cause a sludge build up (thus the reason to stay with the same brand).

As far as the weight goes, 10W-30 or 10W-40 for your climate.

That's MY :2cents:, I'm sure there's more money going to be thrown your way. ;)

The only oils I don't like are Quaker State and Pennzoil. If you go to a machine shop and see cylinder heads that look they have a coat of varnish on them, you can bet that the engine ran mostly Quaker State.

My favorites are Castol and Valvoline.

    My favorite synthetic is Amsoil.

These are just preferences of ME. Don't shoot me if you disagree.

Ok thanx I have used all castrol since Ive gotten the car. I used synthetic for a while and the recently for the first time I used castrol non synthetic. Would that create the same sludge problem or not since it is the same "brand"? Yeah my original question was actually regarding the weight. Sorry for not clarifying.

If you use a quality oil and change it every 3,000 miles or every three months (whichever comes first), you won't have a sludge problem. As Rick said, 10W-30 or 10W-40 for your engine.

any brand name oil should be good. 10-40 or 10-30 is a good weight for fla. you can mis synthetic and reg. oil with no problems. synthetic is just more $$$$.:)

That depends. Synthethics like Amsoil and Riyal Purple are superior in most every way. They run cooler and have no breakdown in viscosity or grade. They do get dirty with combustion gases, etc. and thus, need to be changed.

Amsoil can be used up to 24,000 miles without a change. It is recommended that the filter be changed every six months regardless of drain intervals.

    http://www.amsoil.com/Index.aspx

Royal Purple recommends that once an engine is broken in, you can go 12,000 miles between oil changes, but change the filter every 3,000 to 4,000 miles.

I use Valvoline only and have never had any problem with any of my vehicles. For me here in AZ, I have always used straight 30 wt.
