I need to know which speedometer cable and what speedo gear you all used when you swithed to the 4 speed toploader. My cable is stretched pretty darn tight and it works for a little over 5 miles and either the cable gave out or the gear went kaput. I know that with the Speedometer port being on the opposite side of the transmission that the stock Maverick gear is helicaled wrong but I have heard that some people used it and havenl't had any problem, while others had the same issue that I did.

So can anyone tell me which speedo cable and speedo gear they used when you converted to 4 speed toploader?

    I used the cable from a 70 mustang with a 4 speed.
then you need a left hand driver gear.

to get the correct driven gear (the one on the end of the cable) need to know:

    tire diameter
    gear ratio
drive gear teeth/color (the one on the output shaft of trans)

    What he said.
There is no way anyone has used the Maverick cable and gear without issue. My cable/gear worked for about a month, then gave out. I am pretty sure it chewed up the gear being splined in the opposite direction. Friction kept it going for a short time I suppose.

Even if you use the correct gear, the cable is stretched way further than is kosher for longevity. The bends are supposed to sweep long and gentle. Putting it in the 4 speed, your bends are short and tight. That'll wear it right out.

x2 on going with the Stang cable.

I also used the Mustang one but dont know anything about left hand gear drive. Standard gears work just fine.

We have had this discussion before... You must have gotten the correct gear with your cable.
The Maverick gear is helix cut in one direction (C4, C6, and 3 speed), while the Toploader 4 speed is cut in the reverse direction. Ring any bells?;)

Nope, Speedometer cable did not come with a gear. I put the one on off my 3 speed and it worked fine for last 5 years except it was way off due to the 3:89 gears. Then I just did the math and picked one with the correct number of teeth out of the list for manuals, went to Ford, picked it up, installed it, works great. Been going strong for 2 years now.

Since I had my toploader out doing some repairs, I checked out the gear. Although it worked, I can definitely see where the teeth were being reshaped by the drive gear. Guess its a good time to get the proper gear. Thanks Dave.
