I was on my way home from work today and got to a spot on the highway where there were no other cars on the road but a second gen lightning p/u. So I slowed to about 40 and gassed it then let off, the driver in the lightning looked back and signaled then he took of so i followed, slowly catching and finnaly passing him after he took of first.
when we slowed down he rolled the window down and asked what was under the hood so i told him a 302 he could not believe and wanted to run again so i took off first, jumped a couple of car lengths and he did not have a chance
i have been to the track only once this year with the new motor with a low nine in the 1/8 , desperatly needing a lower gear, shifting into 2nd just before the finish line

    You gotta luv it!!

That's a much better story then me and my 94 Mark 8, I smoked a new Hemi truck with it, but the Marks have a 4.6 32 valve Cobra motor in them.

Way to go with a 302 that's SWEET.

I have a Hemi truck, and it is FAST...at least I thought so until I did some mild work on the maverick. There is no comparison between a fast truck and a decent maverick. Something to do with the 4000 lbs compared to the 2400 lbs, maybe

I even thought my wifes supercharged Bonneville was fast, until...

I have never driven anything that I consider "fast" anymore, since the Mav, and sadly, the Maverick is starting to feel "slow" to me. I know that with just a little engine work, I could have a really nice ride :D (I still have stock rotating assembly on 59,000 miles).

    Well.....

....I will never forget the time back in high school when my then all stock with dual exhaust Comet got spanked......by a red Isuzu Impulse. This one was bright red with gold pinstripes. It had the 'Lotus' suspension package. I can remember the giddy look on the guys face when he pulled along side of me, nodded and pointed down the road. I thought, 'yeah right!'

I think I slowed down and turned down the next street after he left me by 5-6 car lengths. And no, I was not planning on going down that street!

It can go both ways. I wonder if he still has that red Impulse? Hmmm!

I had a buddy with that "Lotus" Impulse, it was a small, light, fast car. I think it may have been turbocharged, also, which kinda helps a little :(

I own a 03 Lightning. I didn't spend $40k on it..almost half that. But, it is a NICE truck...I don't really see it as much of a drag racer because it weighs 4700 LBS and has only 380 HP, but....is there really anything else out there that will do what the 2G Lightning does? I didn't buy it to race it or beat on it. I have always wanted one since the very first 2G lightning hit the dealers back in late '98. Guess you could say I fell in love.

Handles better than a Mustang GT, accelerates just as good, yet still is VERY comfortable to drive and pulls a trailer great. A very well rounded vehicle with a bed and the ability to tow a pretty heavy trailer. Sure, a SRT has 500 HP, but if you can't plant the tires, all the HP in the world is useless. And the Hemi trucks...haha, I just have to laugh. All hype.

Anyway, yes, the look on people's faces when they get smoked is priceless. I remember a stoplight-to-stoplight (probably no more than 100 yards) run against a '01 Firebird back when I had my POS Mustang SVO. 'Course the SVO wasn't stock, but after I ate up the firebird, he stopped in at the convenience store behind me and asked me what I did to the 5.0 to make it that fast. When I told him it was a 2.3 4 cylinder he laughed and thought I was crazy. Once he found out I was serious, he wasn't too happy!

Then, years ago I had this '74 Maverick..302 turbocharged, 18 PSI boost...made a ton of torque and power...surprised a LOT of people, including myself.

Cool stories keep them coming guys. The best one I have is racing a 93ish viper. I spanked him until I ran out of gear about 125ish:D

Disclaimer: I do NOT approve or encourage street racing of any kind. The following story happened when I was about 21 years old and ALOT Stupider than I am now.
(does that mean I`m only a little stupid now?...maybe!)

Anyway , here in Macon we have a Big Stereo store that is privately owned.
The owner has "Money" and so he bought a New 1984 /85 Lambourghini Jalpa.
A Jalpa was like an entry level Lambo, but still it was cool looking and made the
statement to all that the owner had money.(Impressed yet? )

Anyway I was driving past the Stereo store one night and as I did ,the Lambo was pulling out of the driveway. The guy in the car pulled up next to me with an arrogant smirk and revved up at me.we were doing about 30 mph (I was in my Grabber which at the time had a "Built" (stout)solid lifter cam, Ported heads ect, ect.:D 289 with a 4 speed.

I figured what the heck if I loose I`d be loosing to a $45.000.oo
    (at the time) car!

So I gave him the nod.. Stuck the shifter in 1st revved it to the moon dropped the clutch and away we went...
Now I realize that on a curvy road,or top end,I wouldn`t have stood a chance.
But we were going Stop light to stop light and after all...HE started it .
Money bags and his "Lambo" never had a chance ! The old Green Maverick with the "screamin lil 289 " simply walked away with the tires protesting on each 6,800 rpm gear change.:29:

At the light when he pulled up beside me...the smirk was GONE from his face, and he just stared straight ahead. When the light changed he turned right and slowly drove away.:)

Now that was a SWEET story!
I also agree with not street racing.
But here is my Maverick story anyway.

My Maverick was somewhat streetable about 3 years ago and has I was picking up one of my daughters from school (could only get one in the car at a time because of the roll bars) I came up to a stop light and low and behold there was the so called fastest little import in my town. I said to my daughter this should be fun!!
But when we left the light he didn't do anything so nether did I.
After I was 3 or 4 cars lenghts in front of him I hear the MAD bumble bee muffler kick in and here he comes, by this time we have gone around a small turn and have nothing but 1 mile of clear road. Now I have to down shift into first gear and hit the hammer, well after I did that I knew I was in trouble. The street tires started SMOKING and that purple Honda just went right by me.
So after I shifted into second the tires caught and back into the seat my daughter went and as we BLEW by the honda I looked back and the smoke was still coming out from the rear quarters. Once I hit third I knew it was time to slow down because that is when I'm crossing the 1/8 mile traps and I know I'm close to a 100 MPH.
All I can say is HONDA EAT MY SMOKE!!

    Please don't street race!

You would be amazed at what the stock 302 and 2.79 gears will do...I was able to keep up,almost, with the 5.0 mustangs with all stock. Now that I have new intake, heads, and exhaust, the 5.0s are no problem, even mildly modified ones.

I was at the track a couple weeks back and this 94-95 mustang got in line beside me (notice the RESPONSIBLE RACING, at the track, not on the road  ). Anyway, I wasn't paying attention and I was revving the engine up to "clear out" the intake, and the light turns green and he takes off. I am still revving, so I put it in gear, wait until my next rev and let er rip, a good .5 second or more after he leaves the line.

I caught up, got my ticket after him (he took the first turn out) and the girl handing out the timeslips is pi$$ed because the other driver gave her a hassle because "I took off way before him, how could he have won" or something along those lines.

    Fun race... :D

Yes I too have dont some stupid things...but fun!! :evilsmile

Our last year living in Indiana the family was at a car show. Well time to leave my son ask to ride home with me....and Mom said ok, cause Dad will behave then since he will be in the car  . There was a 80ish model Chevy truck with a 454 in it at the car show...and of course the owner was acting like it was John Forces Mustang! Well guess who we pull up next to at a light on the way home...yep and he rev's it up. Me being the good Dad just looked over and laughed :rofl2: :evilsmile then my son said the wrong thing "Dad can you take him!!"" :yup: So we left the light at 2800 rpms and let the ponies sing though the 3 inch flowmaters and and only making it into two gears (4:62 rearend gears and spool) we are sitting at the next light waiting for him while my son is waving at him. The guy that was in the passanger sit of the truck was dieng laughing....the drive was just shaking his head...but finally gave me a (y)

Before anyone gets on my case about racing with my son in the car.....as I was putting the car in the garage he ran in and tells Mom what WE did. So my backside hurt for a few days.....but its a memory my son and I will have forever!!! :D
