I just noticed the the passenger side arm rest in my 1973 Grabber is tan and the interior is ginger (medium brownish). I don't know why it took so long for me to notice this, but I didn't until now. I think it would be easier to paint the arm rest to match the door panel than to find a matching one. What color and kind of paint should I buy to match the Ford interior ginger, and where can I find it? Roz
Let's see now! You just now noticed that you have a differant color arm rest ( how differant could it be ?) Ginger is Tan, as is a medium brown, you can get some spray on dye at any good auot parts store.
Now I'm not sure. I took a couple of pictures. The arm rest looks lighter than the door panel, but that may be the way it is. The first picture is the passenger's arm rest, the second is the driver's (which is dirtier and therefore looks darker). What do you think? Roz
I would say that it has just faded. My 74 has a tan interior ... I got it from a little old lady and the interior was 100% original. The kickpanels were a different shade than the dash pad which was a different shade than the dash which was a different shade from the door panels which were a different shade the the steering column. The interior may have all started off the same color but all the different parts and materials the interior is made up of tend to handle UV rays quite differently over the years ...
they look OK to me, but for $4-$5 you can get a can of plastic coat paint and spray both so you know that they match
do a search at the top for "ginger". there was a set of ginger 70-72 arm rest for sale a few days ago ...frank...
Thanks for the tip. I found the message. The arm rest design was changed in 1973, so the earlier ones won't fit my car. I PM'd the seller anyway. Roz
I have heard to use the Krylon spray paint for vinyl surfaces. It is supposed to stick and be flexible enough that it won't peel off. Not sure if you will find the colors to match what you want, but you could repaint the entire door and accessories to match with a new color. I have followed those Krylon threads, and will try that with my interior, if I ever get the new door installed...
I have had mixed results with Krylon Fusion on vinyl. Sometimes, it will not dry. In fact I have a set of sun visors on the shelf that are still tacky after 1 year! I spoke with a Krylon rep and they told me that they do have a problem with soft plastics like vinyl sometimes. The cure is to use a clear over the Fusion and that will dry it up. When doing any soft plastics like vinyl, I now use only real vinyl dyes or SEM products.
i'd clean them up and see how far off they are after that. then , if you want, you might take them both off and paint them both so they will match.
