Paint to look like vinyl top.

My 72 Grabber had a vinyl top. I want paint to look like vinyl. Will hammered paint be the best?

No since it is a multi toned(colored) paint.If you use it as a base for texture purposes only..."Maybe" it will look ok when topcoated.

 

rubber bed liner stuff comes to mind....

or just go smooth for that classy look, like i did

The chip guard by 3M and others is a protective film. I am looking for a paint.

Maybe a roll on bedliner kit would work.

I am going to try the roll on bedliner. I need to find it in a tan or saddle color.

I'll take pictures of the process and final product. I need to repair some small dents first.

I think you need something that is top coated. All of the bedliner stuff I have seen seems to fade over a year or two. Maybe some of the higher cost spray in stuff doesn't but I have seen pleny of trucks in parking lost with what looked like spray in liner that had a dull look to it.

All of it does, it's the nature of the beast. When I was working at a truck and trailer store, I helped do the research on the chemicals when the contract of the chemical supplier came due. Every one of the companies I checked with said the liner would fade, but different chemicals take longer than others to fade.

For anyone's information, here are close-up pictures of the Herculiner coating (used in the other thread) and of an actual vinyl top.

I don't think the Herculiner is going to fool anyone from up-close, but if you aren't trying to fool anyone into thinking it's vinyl, then no worries.

Rick, thanks for the close up pictures. I just want a textured look, not smooth. Since the car had a vinyl top original.

I'll try both application to see which, I like best.
