Well, the mav is going to get the sexy bumpers and paint soon, and I want to paint the rear bumper. Is necessary to dechrome (if that's a word) the bumper so I can paint it? Or will it be the same if I use an old chromed bumper?

I removed the chrome on my bumpers when they were painted (via sand blasting). The paint will not stick well to the chrome surface.

Yep, maverick1970 is right, you have to sandblast them first. I did that with mine and they're still looking great many years later.

Excellent!! so is just a thing of sandblasting them, I thought it was a more complicated method to get the chrome out of the bumper.

    Thanks a lot!! :)

probly more elbow grease this way, but can you take a high speed wire wheel to them? Or a grinder and hit 'em a bit?

My rear bumper is fugly and I am on the fence as to either try to paint them or find a replacement.

also, anyone ever use the chrome paint, I saw it in the store but my gut tells me it is crap.

chrome paint... Unless its gotten better over the years, the finish on the cap is nothing close to what you get. It always looked just like silver paint.

I would avoid the wire wheel or grinder method. The wire wheel will most likely leave unwanted swiel marks (at best) and a grinder will gouge the metal. I recommend sandblasting with 000 media.

a friend of mine has chrome painted bumpers. someone told him he should get rid of them on his race car and get some fiberglass ones to save weight. he said thank you, they are fiberglass. i believe the paint was about $200 a pint, but he does build show cars and race cars. :)

wow thats expensive. Not terrible for show or race quality...but way too much for my little venture. lol. I may toy around with some cheap paint and see what happens...I am skeptical that it will look good though.
