I am installing the passenger side sports mirror on my 1970 Maverick. Are there nuts available that go into the door skin or what else can I use. Thanks John
If you install nutserts, you will need a tool however you can improvise. This is the way they work. This is the correct tool. If you don't have the tool, you can use a bolt and a spacer to draw it up. Some of the Mustang parts places sell rubber nutserts that just swell out when tightened. I've never tried those but they seem like they might not hold that good.
Also some Mustang vendors sell the type that looks like a drywall anchor. Stay away from this style. See http://mmb.maverick.to/showthread.php?t=54213
I seem to remember seeing individual tools sold at Ace Hardware for a reasonable price (under $10). These are set up specifically for the thread size and count and are turned by a wrench (perhaps two) to set the nutsert. You ought to be able to get the nutserts there too. Size one according to the screw you will use in the mirror. I suggest stainless steel screws. While doing this, if you haven't seen this discussed already, check out ideas on positioning the mirrors a bit better than the factory did ... http://mmb.maverick.to/showthread.php?t=85926&highlight=moving+mirrors+forward&page=2
