just got the petronix ignition from AK. i also ordered the coil but wonderful slow AK has the coil on a backorder/dropship. anyone else have slow shipping problems with AK?
so i was wondering if i could still install the ignition with the stock coil?
also when i change to the electronic ignition is there any obvious performance gain?
a kid can hope for more power out of that 250 cant he? hehe:rolleyes:

    thanks guys,
    Rob C.

Rob C; I run a Pertronix Ignitor ll with an Accel coil, yellow high performance coil, and it runs just fine. They are at any Advance or speed shop. Also, any Mustang place will have the Pertronix coil. Hope that helps.

I put the petronix in my 57 with a stock coil. Been running great for years.

  i think you will see a diff. i did. you get all around better performance in your firing. easier start when cold or hot. i had it on a 250 6cyl. and now on my 302. jmo...frank,,,:bananaman :bananaman

ok thanks for the info. in the directions it says i need a minimum of 1.5ohms resistance i think the stock one should be alright but can anyone look it up in a chilton manual that may have the specs for it?
just wanna make sure i dont screw anything up:rolleyes:

    If you have .....

If you have the resistance wire or have a ballast resistor to the coil used to keep from burning up the points - you can remove it and put a straight piece of 14 ga. wire in there so you get a full 12 volts to the coil and Pertronix. That in itself will be a big improvement as the resistor wire limits the voltage to around 9.5V.

Rob, I looked in Chiltons and could not find any info on the ohms of resistance. If you have a meter you could verify what ohms of resistance you actually have.

Oh yea I forgot - use good Spiral core wires with the Pertronix too. I had an old set of solid core wires with my points and did not change them when I went to Pertronix on my truck. I could not get the motor to rev like it should and every once in a while the motor would just shut off dead. I'd just throw it in neutral and start it right back up. Then one day I found the Pertronix instructions in my tool box and there in bold letters it said "do not use with solid core wires." Changed the wires and everything is OK - solid wires threw off too many waves. You couldn't even hear the radio in that truck with the buzz from the solid wires.

Definitely measure the coil resistance. My MSD Blaster coil had too low resistance and I had to add a ballast resistor to use the Pertronix. Now I have a Mallory HyFire box between the Ignitor and the coil so the resistor isn't needed.
