Hello I fill so stupped I was working on my 2nd head porting it out and using the cyl shap bit i didn't pay close enough attention to my angle of the bit and grinded a hole right though the floor of the port and these heads are brand new never been on an engine but i though i was going to have to get a new head but A guy I know told Me to go buy a nickel welding rod for cast iron and he could fix it. I realy hope he can, I am going to give it a shot I figger its not going to hurt the head is trash other wise. Wish me luck Jim
good luck. if not, there used to be a place advert in national dragster, on long islandi think, who could repair cast iron heads and blocks. not cheap.
I had a crack in the rear water jacket of the block. Got some nickel rods and a friend of mine welded it up, no problems.
The guy got it welded up (I hope) doesn't look pretty right now. I hope I can grind it down to flow with the port good but he told me that nickel is harder than cast iron, so I hope my carbide bits will cut it. Thanks for your replys and the luck. Jim
Hello I started grinding on the nickel weld in the port this morning and That nickel is a alot harder than castiron Bad new is there is stell a hole but the good news is its a lot smaller hole one more time with the nickel welding should have it fixed up.
exhaust side I am not going to port the intake side just going to clean them up with 60 grit sand rolles
I grinded it down this morning and I going to have him weld it up tommorro. he doesn't work on sunday because he goes to church. I will get a pic to post of my hugh mistake . Thanks for all the input on the subject Jim
Talked to the guy today that welded on my head and he told me this is yes first time welding on castiron with a nickel rod but any way I let him try it again and the hole is smaller but ever time i grind on the head i alwas have a chunck that comes out leaving a hole. So does any one know where i can purchase a bare gt40p head to replace my damaged one? are know how much the going price is to professanly have it welded?
Dang man. Thats freekin tragic for sure Sorry to hear about that. A machine shop may have a welder experienced enough to weld that up for you.
My dad could weld it for you with no problem if you wanted to ship it to GA. He's been welding for 23 or so years, he can weld about anything and do a damn good job of it.
Hello I call castiron welding service and they told me ELE welding on a iron head or block with nickel is a no no and said they use a wire feed welder using brass or copper I can't remember which one for sure but I started thanking i don't think it take much heat to melt ether one, so i am not so sure welding with brass or copper is a good idea with it being in the exh port. he told me price would be $50.00
When they talk about brass and copper I think they are saying they try to get on the other side of the hole with brass or copper on a temp basis then wire feed (mig) the hole closed. The mig won't stick to the copper or brass which allows them to weld it without blowing out the hole further. I think it is worth a shot for $50
