I know i'm probably getting ahead of myself but... I will be getting a 8" rear end for mav this week or next. What would be the best way to get posi? I think it was summit mag I seen a bolt in kinda thing that was 500 dollars. My pockets aren't that deep right now. I was just wondering if that was best way to go. Also heard about welding the spider gears. How good does that really work? If its pretty strong and will handle good then I can make a trip to sullivan and have elliot do it when he gets some free time. Thx for your guys help!
Welding spyder gears is basically like putting a spool in there. Not recomended for the street. There is no cheap way to go if you want new stuff. Used units are usually cheaper but hard to come by and probably will need rebuilding anyway.
okay sounds like i'm saving for a while. I've never seen the inside of a rear end.. From the pics in summit i just unbolt the back of it and bolt the new one in. Is it really that easy or do I have to get spec. tools to do job?
I've set up many rear without special tools. Richmond gear has a instructional video on how to set these up. Its a worthwhile investment. They say you need a depth gauge to set the pinion depth. But since pinion depth is altered to get the proper wear pattern on the ring gear, I dont see where it makes any difference where you start. The next tool is a mico dial indicator to set back lash. Its supposed to be about 8 to 10 thousands. I always set the back lash so I can just barely detect any. I have used this method and then checked it with the dial. Never a problem. The last thing is a torque wrench which measures in/lbs. Again, its just a matter of feel usually directly proportional to how long you been working on cars. The dial indicator is a good investment for alot of other applications. Buy a cam degree kit and it will have one in there. Who's not going to install a hipo cam at some time in their life? You should degree a cam when you do. The torque wrench you might be able to borrow or rent from a mechanic.
Where would I get the video at? Also any tool I can use more then once i would like to buy. When i was changing oil they made everyone use torq wrench so we wouldn't get into trouble for stripping any plugs, pans, etc.. do you by chance have any idea how much any of these tools cost so I have a ruff idea?
The 9 in. parts are cheaper than 8 inch. I checked yesterday at the car show. A equa-lock type locker-good for street, 3.25:1 8 in. ring gear and all seals, bearings, install kit etc. were going to cost me $670+. For a 9 in. I can get the same stuff for $447. But, finding a 9 inch housing that does not need to be cut to fit these cars in not an easy task. IF you do find one, or cut one to the dimensions of your 8 inch rear, IF the 9 inch setup is a 28 spline you may be able to use the axles from your 8 inch rear as they should be the same for both rear ends. Here is another one ready to bolt in with a really nice 3.40:1 gear ratio http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=33731&item=7933417170&rd=1
i put a mini spool in mine. cost about $40 on ebay with the cross pin. not bad, but have to check tire pressure on a regular basis to keep tire squeal to a minimum. if you drive it sanely, no problems that you wouldnt have with a posi as far as driveability. hard throttle in a curve on slick road, rear will try to slide out (so will posi). hard throttle on a dry curve and it tries to go straight. drive sanely, no problems. i'll admit i dont do 50 miles a day with it. if had the extra money, yeah i'd put a powertrax in it, but i can live with this. by the way, if the car sees track time, the spool is actually easier on the axles than a locker type rear end. lockers hit the drivers side axle really hard when they lock up. clutch type posi doesnt do this.
lol When i get the car working again I do take a trip every once in a while with 100+ miles at a time. I was using it as every day car for while also.
Stay away from the spool. parking is a pain in the butt and it's not just under throttle that the rear could slide out on you. Any time you are going around a curve the tires are travelling different arcs and therefore should be able to turn at different rates. A spool does not allow this even when coasting so stability is definately comprimised. This said, I've had a spool in my car for a couple of years now and haven't pled it up yet, but I have had my share of white knuckle rides and got caught in the rain when all us Washington and BC folks got together. had no choice but to drive it on the freeway in a downpour and on one particular on ramp the back make a very impressive attempt at meeting the front. My hands were sore for an hour at the end of that drive due to several more small close calls. Just my own personal experience. Thaere are lots of opinions on this board and the best idea probably falls in the middle of everyone.
Hey Mavaholic, I have a stall question. I have a 302 Comet. I have a choice of a 2000 of 2500 stall. I will be driving the car on the street. Or do I really need a stall. CompCams says yes. Also what gear ratio to use? Thanks
Beats me..............I'm a gear banger. Stall is what you do when your girlfriend wants to get married, or when its tax time.
