Have any of you guys ever powder coated an intake manifold? No matter what I do, my intake always yellows or discolors, so I'm thinking of having my new Air Gap manifold powder coated. I've had valve covers done and never had a problem with heat, oil, or gas and they look great, so I think it would work OK. I saw a 460 in a street rod that had a Jet Hot coated intake, looked very nice and the owner said he never had a problem with discoloration. But it was very expensive. I'll bite the bullet and have Jet Hot do it if I have to, but if the powder coating works well I'd rather go that route. So, how bout' it. Anyone have a coated intake on their car, or have any other ideas on what works?
They make a clear powder coat. So, if you get your intake cleaned up, you can powder coat it clear. Intakes are powder coated all the time.
Tim- There is a fellow on this board occasionally that calls himself Pegasus. He does excellent powdercoating from the pictures I've seen. Several people here have had him do work for them. He'd be the guy to talk to about this. Check the member list and drop him a line.
I have the Ford motorsport valve covers on my truck powder coated clear, but I've had people say that sometimes when you coat a new intake manifold, that it gives off a gas or something when they heat the powder and it screws up the finish. A shop here in town told me the same thing, so I was curious if someone here had done this before on a new manifold and had run into this.
I had my Edelbrock intake Jet-Hot coated, not only stays looking good but the underneath is shielded from heat. Cost around $130.
I sprayed my intake with a clear product from Eastwood. It is made to spray on alum intakes and keep them looking good. So far....so good.
Thanks for the comments guys. Jet Hot for 130 bucks sounds good, the guy I talked to with the street rod said 300.00 so I never called and asked.
Jet-Hot prices their work on the size of the item. A 460 intake is a lot bigger than a small block intake. You are running a small block, right?
On what, the Grabber? If thats the case, archeologist will be eyeballing that thing long into the future before it ever gets worn out.
Go Dennis!! Give him hell !!!! I had my intake powdercoated in aluminum before it was ever put on. I was told opposite of the above post, that powdercoating would not turn out as well if it had been ran before. 1200 miles and mine looks like new. Jet Hot is good for headers, but I would not pay that much for an intake. $300 for headers, maybe. I paid a guy at the local Harley $25 to powder coat mine. It looks great. Seth
Yep....that's right....the Grabber has been done for 2 months and I have been "sandbagging" this whole time....just waiting to bring it to Carlisle and win Best of show!! It is the intake on my Station wagon, that gets driven about once a week and sits outside all the time. I figured it would be a good test mule.
I have before....many, many years ago. Trailered it there....drove it home....that's what you do when the "chase" vehicle breaks down!!
