Can anyone enlighten me to the difference in power boosters used through 1974 models and those used after 1975? I'm looking to add power brakes to my '73 and found that A1 Cardone only supplies remanufactured boosters for '75-'77 Mavs. Any idea how hard it would be to fit the later booster onto a earlier model (auto tranny). Thanks,

    John

Well, if I am not mistaken, the power brake option was not offered in 1974. Manual discs were, but not power. The 75 and up boosters will fit in the older Mavericks with little modifications ( a couple holes to drill out for the mounting on the firewall) Yoiu will need thee power assembly, the brake pedal assembly, and the disc brake proportioning valve and you will have to do a little custom work (bending and such) to the brake tubes to have them hook into the prop. valve correctly (they hook up in different positions than the drum) I did this whole power disc swap on my 73 Maverick with a 5.0 and C4, and it went great. A very worthwhile mod. I believe there is a link to a more in detail process on some where on this board. I am sure someone else can find it for you. Good luck! :)

Thanks Corbin. That would explain why I can't find a booster for the '73 then. If P/B were an option in Mustangs, Falcons, and others, why not the Mav?

Anyhow, you said I would need the pedal assembly? From a '75-'77 P/B auto equipped car? It's different? How so? I have a die grinder and a welder - I can adapt ;) ;)

Well, the power disc brake option was not introduced earlier because of the great cost of designing a system for this "economy" car. Later they realized that it was a good option. Here is one link, and I know there is another somewhere. I will try to find it also.

You won't need the welder, :) and the pedal assembily, and bracket are different (but they bolt under the dash the same). I will find the other article for you. It has pictures of all the stuff you need, and a picture of how different the power vs non power booster are.

    Here it is:

Go here and then click on mechanical, and under braking improvements go to power booster swap. It has lots of pictures and very good tips and information. There are also other great tips for mods as well. Good luck :)
