So the Maverick I have right now is an I6 but I'm not sure whether it's the 170 or a 200. I wanted a V8 and may eventually go that route but was curious if there was a way to get max HP out of this little engine. I want to switch out the points and possibly a new header (I have a new exhaust already on this car, hopefully it can bolt to something else); do they make ported or aluminum heads for something this small? Should I look around for a 250 I6? If I get a V8 I'm getting an entirely new vehicle, but I'm just wondering if it's possible, in the event I can't find a suitable stock V8 car, to make this little beast a go-er. :thumbs2:

As they say, there is no replacement for displacement. My 73 has a 200 in it and I've changed over to the Pertronix ignition and did the 2bbl swap about 3 years ago. Runs much better but still can't spin the tires.
I really like the straight six though--you can get to everything, and the bottom end is bulletproof with seven main bearings. Will eventually go to a 250 when funds allow with some slight modifications on the intake side and headers at a minimum.

The guys over at fordsix.com are the source!!!

If you want to watch something fun check out this ford 200 six cylinder running in the 8's!!!

There is a picture of a 6-cyl mav doing a major wheel-stand somewhere on here. I did a search and couldn't find it.

    Appropriate at this point.

But, of course, bigger power is easier with a bigger engine.

If your engine is original to your car, check the 5th digit of the VIN = U is a 170 and T is a 200 and L is a 250

If not the original engine, look for the tag mounted to the coil bolts. It will tell you what motor and when it was made. That is, if it wasn't removed and lost sometime in the last 40 years.

I have a 1bbl nitrous plate that would make it go good!

Has anyone ever used the aluminum heads from CI? They're pricey but within my current budget; it looked too like a few Mavericks were used in testing. Wonder if he has any available though, from the message boards it sounded like he had a little snafu with his builders.

I've got a ways to go before I even think about any engine mods but was just wondering if anyone else here has put them on their I6 and what kind of difference you noticed (and what other mods you did). Thanks! :)

    ETA: It's a 70 Maverick 200ci I6 I'd be putting it on.

The Aluminum Head is the best way to go from this side of the world. There is a guy on the FordSix forum that is selling parts to make an Aussie Crossflow head for the American Sixes. You would need to do some mods to the block to get the head to fit. Other problems would be that cams and others items will have to be Aussie parts.

If you want to keep the 6 and have the budget to get the A. Head, go for it. They are practically a 40 HP add on.

Here is a nice 200 running the aluminum head with some other mods.
