my maverick broke down on me earlier and it had something to do with the power steering.I was parked on the street and as I steered the wheels to pull out on to the street I heard something rupture.at first it sounded like my tire popped and it was leaking air but as I got under the car I noticed it was something around the power steering control valve.I went ahead and topped off the reservoir and I steered left and nothing leaked but when I steer right it starts spraying all the power steering fluid.I'm currently facing downhill and its hard to get under the car so I probably will get towed.does anyone have an idea of What might be the problem?
Sound like you blew out a hose or a seal. You will have to get it into the shop or school and take a look.
I blew a hose.I went to oreillys and they should be here tomorrow.should i replace the other hose?and once I replace the hose is there any type of bleeding required f or the power steering system?
There will be bleeding involved. Replace the hose, and fill the system, then cycle the steering back and forth with the engine running, then add fluid as necessary. What hose was it? Considering they may all be 40 years old..you may want to think about replacing them...
I ordered two of those same hoses yesterday. They were $6.76 a piece through RockAuto. You may as well replace both of them since you are right there anyway.
They're 15 bucks each at oreillys but they will have them here by 10 in the morning.I would of bought them from rockauto but I want to drive my car by tomorrow.I just got a T5 installed in the mav so I want to break it in
Hose looks like it was worn thru....doesn't look like it "burst". Must have been rubbing on something.
My power steering has always leaked. .the only other thing sitting infront of the hose was the power steering cylinder boot.I think that's what's its called.
When i thread the new hose on do I need to put a little bit of teflon tape on the threads? When I took off the old hoses they had some type of sealant or tape on the threads
Those hoses do a lot of flexing while enduring heat and pressure. Replacing both at the same time is a good idea. You might consider replacing the rest of the hoses as they all flex while driving and are probably just as old and brittle. Shouldn't need any Teflon or sealant of any kind. It's the flares and seats that do the sealing as long as the seats are good. Replacement seats for the control valve and power ram are available. Ron
Ok.and for the fluid I just need power steering fluid right? On the dipstick for the power steering pump it says to use automatic transmission fluid
